Yahoo: Sources: Virginia Tech to hire Marquette coach Buzz Williams

Disagree. You can go to LateNightHoops if you want to read what that jackslap has to write. The board here is better without him and his huge-never wrong ego.

I always thought EG#9 was another of GW's monikers for a long time. Very strange all your support and knowledge of his feelings on this thread.

Isn't he a CDH grad? Wonder how he took that last second JP 3 to seal the game.

Absolutely right.

Huge ego, makes assertions of fact without ever providing evidence when asked, believes in basketball conspiracies, has it out for Teague for unknown reasons, etc.

He doesn't need to ever come back.

Of the 2014 guys (i.e. Cohen, Harris, Hill, Pierce, Shayok), Cohen is the most likely to stay given he's from Seymour, WI. Harris had some issues in HS and was suspended for his entire senior season. I do not believe he ever signed a LOI, so he's probably open regardless. Hill, who appears to be the best of the bunch, Pierce and Shayok are from out east (I believe), so it would not surprise me if they asked out of their LOIs to say on the east coast.

Flory is a 2017 prospect, so he's a very early commit. That said, his dad played at Marquette in the 80s, so he's probably not de-committing unless the new coach tells him to.
For what it's worth, I've seen Cohen this past year play against a top d2 team in the Bay Area. Was not impressed with his game. During warmups he looked explosive and skilled but during the game he hovered around the 3pt line and almost exclusively shot 3s from the slots.

I think he has he tools to be a slashing type player but for whatever reason he was reluctant to get involved in the game. He did have around 15 Pts in each game however I expected a lot more out of him to be honest. Lacked the interest on both sides of the ball that I would have expected from him in those high profile games and with his skillset.

Marquette will be fine. They always seem to end up with good teams and good coaches. They're a Jesuit school for pete's sake.

GW

My heart bleeds for him; he should post exclusively on the Marquette board. Do you go writing articles for the Iowa State board as EG9 Gopher Cyclone?

He, and anyone else can post where they damn well please. I know lots of people with dual allegiances. Most of them grew up one place and went to college somewhere else. Big deal.

I agree with EG9, GW brings an interesting perspective to the Hole. He seems to be a big hot poker in some folks rear.

To that I say :clap::clap::clap:

No it hasn't. They've made the tournament twice in the last 28 years. By far the worst in the ACC. That's not decent.

To quote the great philosopher Homer J. Simpson: "Facts are meaningless. You could use facts to prove anything that's even remotely true!"

If you're an optimist you'd say they made it twice in the last 18 years, technically.

You could also point out the fact that they have officially won more NCAA tournament games than we have the past 18 years. Or that they have had a better record in 4 out of the last 10 years than we have. Or that until 3 years ago they were the better team between UVA and VT (record-wise).

Taken from a 30,000 foot view it looks like a lateral move at best, but I see his reasoning for making the jump.

Wasn't there some rub between him and his AD? I might be thinking of someone else.

That AD is gone. Marquette currently has an interim AD and an interim President. That is a big reason why he left, uncertainty of who his bosses will be. Just one of a few reasons though.

What does being Jesuit have to do with basketball?

They are in good shape because they've always played in a respectable but not meat-grinder conference, they spend a lot of money on basketball, and they have made some very good decisions on coaches. Buzz Williams was a no-name when they hired him. Not sure about Crean, but I don't think he was that well known either. Whether their new administration can make the same good decisions ... we'll see.

Crean was an assistant under Izzo.

Brain Wardle, MU alumn and current UWGB coach would be a quiet yet decent hire for MU... I have opinions both positive and negative about his coaching but he does a decent job recruiting out of GB

Since you quoted Homer, I'll give you a pass. But VT is a crap job. It's a football school in fairly remote area, that's the 3rd best job (at best) in the state. If you're trying to argue it's a better job than MN, you're nuts. The truth is what they had with Seth Greenburg, as annoying as he could be, was probably as good as it gets, and they fired him.

Getting Buzz is a nice get for them and he'll probably get them back to that level and maybe beyond. But why he would want that when he had a better job at Marquette is beyond me. Maybe they just offered too much $$ to say no. Maybe the NCAA stuff is true. But it wasn't because 'it's a spectacular opportunity' no matter what he says.

Buzz is taking a pay cut of about a million per year. It's definitely NOT a better job than Marquette. It is the ACC and the Big East is not what it used to be. Maybe Marquette is going have to cut back on what they spend on basketball (they are #2 behind Duke) because of the new Big East. Marquette doesn't have a President now & they are looking for a new AD, I think Buzz had issues with the old AD and that's why he isn't there any more.

Buzz's first tweet at VT said something about 'when you look around and see that you are the smartest guy in the room, you need to change rooms.' (It's since been taken down, if anybody has a screen shot of it, help?) I'm sure he was fed up with what was going on around him. He's a great guy from all I've heard (have a friend in the athletic department there).

I doubt he will be incredibly successful there, but maybe it's a stepping stone to a better job.

OK. But then at least go to Wake Forest or even BC.

Nick Noskowiak tweeted that his recruitment was wide open now, but then deleted the tweet, but it was up for while, wonder if gophers would be interested, he is a 2015 kid

I could have swore we were showing interest, but maybe I'm imagining that. I wouldn't be surprised if Wisconsin at least kicked the tires on him since they are looking for a 2015 PG and he is in their backyard. But like UWOle said, their priority is Jarvis.

They can't have jarvis. He doesn't want to get stuck in that slow down boring offensive system. He wants to start the next big thing as one of Pitino's first big recruits.

This whole thing is very strange. If VT called Shaka and offered the job, he'd probably laugh and hang up. Yet Buzz jumped and now Shaka's going to replace him? Marquette is a marginal step up at this point. Why do it now?

only thing I can think of is money and it is home to him, though he did say had hard time growing up there with the racial divide

I'm guessing he could have had the UCLA job last year for considerably more money...

Marquette apparently spents the 2nd most money in the country on basketball only behind Duke. Buzz was set to make just under $3 million next season, a sum that made him one of the most well compensated coaches in all of NCAA basketball.

He had a rollover contract that never expired. Listen to that again. He never had to worry about negotiating a longer term or asking for a pay raise, as it happened automatically whether his team reached the Elite 8 or missed the NIT.

Sounds awesome. Yet Buzzed chucked it all for one of the worst BCS jobs there is...

Either Marquette is one of the premier jobs in America and Buzz is crazy.

Or Marquette's a small fish in a fading conference and Shaka is crazy.

Both cannot be true.

MU has no AD, no president, in a slumping conference, and now head coachless,! I hope they can turn it around fast or its gonna a hard road ahead of us!

OK. But then at least go to Wake Forest or even BC.

Simple, Wake has unrealistic expectations & has been a dumpster fire for years. BC & Wake are both smaller, private schools, just what he is leaving behind at MU. He will have very little pressure to win, a new, young AD he won't have to worry about, & if he takes them to the tourney once, he will be gone to one of the blue blood jobs.

Big East is going to be a good conference, outside of the top blue bloods many of the teams in the Big East recruited at least at the level of most other top conferences in the country, Seton Hall, Georgetown, Providence, Xavier, Marquette, and Villanova all had very good recruiting years, its home, you don't have to beat Duke, North Carolina, Kansas, or Mich State every year, you have a big budget, I can see why he would like the job.
