Yahoo: Sources: Virginia Tech to hire Marquette coach Buzz Williams

I know a certain GopherHole poster that is going to be way bummed.

Wonder if sandy Cohen will decommited?

He already signed, so he'd have to be let out.

We were also after their 2015 PG from Sun Prairie, WI who could simply decommit. Wonder if Wisconsin would go after him since he's in their backyard. That could be good actually, with Wisconsin out of the picture for Jarvis I really like our chances.

ETA: And I'm also bummed about Buzz leaving since I have a Marquette degree. If anyone is going to steal their recruits though, I hope it's Minnesota! POLLYANNA!

I don't believe UW was that interested in Noskowiak at the time he committed to MU, but it wouldn't surprise me if UW took a look if Nick decided to de-commit. Jarvis has been the priority at PG for some time, and I don't see that changing even if Noskowiak becomes available.

GW brings some valuable contributions to the board, and I am sure he'd admit he can come off a bit prickly at times. I feel for him losing a good coach in Buzz to Virginia Tech, that has to sting. As much as people worry about Minnesota losing a coach, we've never had to experience that (which is why we that angst should be directed towards actually being relevant as opposed to fear of losing a coach).

I'd be fascinated to know what (if any) conversations were like between the Gophers and Buzz last year. There were certainly some rumors that he might end up at Minnesota, that were not just coming out of the local media. I'd hate to find out that the schools unbelievable inability to build a practice facility kept us from being able to land Buzz. I like Coach Pitino a lot and think the future has the potential to be very bright in the Twin Cities as long as we start competing on the financial side of things in regards to facilities, private jets, etc, etc.

You need to get in touch with Norwood Teague on what your plan is.

Buzz had no reason to leave last year. The Big East was looking like a decent conference (especially when Stevens was still at Butler) and he was picked to win the conference. Now a year later they missed the tournament after making the sweet 16 three years in a row, he doesn't have a president or athletic director, and he is apparently close to the new AD at VT. Also there are some rumors that the NCAA is about to come down on Marquette for recruiting violations (under Buzz). So that could be a factor. I'm glad we have Pitino.

My heart bleeds for him; he should post exclusively on the Marquette board. Do you go writing articles for the Iowa State board as EG9 Gopher Cyclone?

Prove it. Oh, never mind. rumors are truth on GopherHole.

We have a replacement candidate for Buzz now in charge of the ASU Sun Devils. If you know anyone that has the ear of a Marquette influencer. Please ask them to promote Herb Sendek as a candidate.

Buzz, Buzz, Buzz. I understand wanting out of Wisconsin. But Virginia Tech? Really? You can do better than that. Tony Bennett has UVa rolling. VCU is better. Even Richmond is better. To say nothing of Coach K, Roy and the rest of the ACC. Good luck to you.

Edit* should point out this is a copy and paste from Marquette board as to status of their players and recruits after the firing, should also add that they all seem to think Luke Fischer will be going with buzz to vtech

Luke Fischer probably ain't transferring. He sat out this year at IU to transfer to Marquette.

Maybe Tan Cream would like to get out of Bloomington ahead of the firing squad?

I think the move makes sense. The Big East was underwhelming this year and will be questionable in the future, Marquette struggled, and it appeared he did not get along with upper management. VaTech hasn't been great recently but is usually a decent program.

No it hasn't. They've made the tournament twice in the last 28 years. By far the worst in the ACC. That's not decent.

I should have done some research on our rumored pursuit of Buzz last year before posting. Their was quite a bit of "buzz" about Buzz around this time last year, but one of the major stumbling blocks was a buyout that was reported to be north of $2 million dollars. According to a couple different articles I've read this evening, Buzz's buyout was reduced significantly with the change in Athletic Directors at Marquette. Allegedly, his buyout is/was just $100,000 now. I obviously can't know for certain, but I doubt Minnesota would buyout Tubby, pay Marquette $2 million or so, and give Buzz $2.5 million or more on a long term contract.

Anyways, I am very happy with Pitino so far and think he has the potential to do big things provided he's put on somewhat of an even playing field with other major conference teams in terms of facilities and resources.

Dr. Don, you asked for my plan: First of all, I don't blame Teague for nothing getting done yet, as he hasn't been on the job long enough to truly own the facilities issue. I think it's sad that Northwestern got the go ahead for a 220 million dollar facility, and Minnesota can't even get a 190 million dollar facilities plan off the ground (yet). There's no reason a small state like Iowa can find a way to find enough donors for better facilities at TWO universities than Minnesota can put together for their one D1 university in the state. Between a large alumni base and the number of fortune 500 companies in the Twin Cities, I would think their would be a couple of rich guys willing and able to put some big money behind Gopher athletics. My fear is that there is not anyone (or enough of them) willing to put that money towards the Football/Basketball programs because of the decades of poor performance from both (more so football). It then becomes a chicken or the egg scenario where we can't get donations because we're not good enough to get people excited about the program(s) and we can't get good enough to get people excited about the program(s) because we're not getting any/enough donations.

Virtually every other major school in the nation has found a way to build a basketball practice facility. It does not speak well of Minnesota that we didn't have one completed 4-5 years ago, much less the fact that we still have no idea when that facility will be built.

Of the 2014 guys (i.e. Cohen, Harris, Hill, Pierce, Shayok), Cohen is the most likely to stay given he's from Seymour, WI. Harris had some issues in HS and was suspended for his entire senior season. I do not believe he ever signed a LOI, so he's probably open regardless. Hill, who appears to be the best of the bunch, Pierce and Shayok are from out east (I believe), so it would not surprise me if they asked out of their LOIs to say on the east coast.

Flory is a 2017 prospect, so he's a very early commit. That said, his dad played at Marquette in the 80s, so he's probably not de-committing unless the new coach tells him to.

Funny response, well played. GW does attend a lot of Gopher games and I really do believe he cheers for the Gophers above everyone not named Marquette. I have to admit some of his criticism of the program is tough to take when you view him as a Marquette fan first and foremost. That said, we have some "fans" of only the Gophers who I can't stand. The type of low expectation fan that thinks 6-7 wins in football is somehow a ceiling and something that should be celebrated, the same type of "fan" who frequently will post things like "why would he come HERE?". Obviously, not talking about yourself and everyone is entitled to feel however they want about any poster on the board.

Disagree. You can go to LateNightHoops if you want to read what that jackslap has to write. The board here is better without him and his huge-never wrong ego.

I always thought EG#9 was another of GW's monikers for a long time. Very strange all your support and knowledge of his feelings on this thread.

Isn't he a CDH grad? Wonder how he took that last second JP 3 to seal the game.
