...saying Minnesota is a borderline bubble team and won the game because the Gophers "climbed all over our backs and didn't get called for fouls."
...Pathetic
Minnesota won't win the Big 10, but damn...even a 5th place finish in the toughest conference in the nation would be a great season.

ESPN sure did a nice job highlighting their "quality fans" all game long. I thought several of those folks were going to have an aneurysm with all the blood that was rushing to their heads. Full of class they were.

You have to admit the officiating was a little suspect. The officials completely controlled the game with their whistles.

In a game like that the losing team is always going to feel slighted. I would have felt the same way had the Gophers lost as Mbake, Sampson, Iverson, and Big Mo all had 4 fouls with 5 minutes left to play.

I don't necessarily feel the Gophers were given any advantage due to the number of foul calls as I'm not sure how many "bad foul calls" truly went against either team. It is important to remember West Virginia's first game had over 60 fouls between the two teams. West Virginia is obviously a very physical team and this tournament's officials aren't willing to let the game play out. West Virginia had to know going in to this game that they were going to be whistled a lot.

The problem I had with the officials is that it seemed they were inconsistent. They'd call touch fouls, and then a guy would (seemingly) get mauled under the hoop and there would be no call. If you're gonna let 'em play, let 'em play.

The bald guy was classic. He looked like he was one pina colada away from attacking someone.

Tough to win a close game shooting 52% from the stripe. All they had to do was shoot 74% to win.

Their fans expected to win because it wasn't a big name opponent, being close made it that more difficult. Even if it had been a blow out they wouldnt admit that Minnesota was the more talented team.

That type of reaction won't happen in Big Ten play.

What's worse? Being a southern state, or desperately wanting to be a southern state?

I'm looking at you West Virginia (and also Indiana a bit too).

The officiating was awful, but it was hardly in the Gophers favor. WVU got away with 4-5 travels for example, while I didn't see MN get away with any. At best, it was equally awful for both teams.

>>ESPN sure did a nice job highlighting their "quality fans" all game long.<<

Not to mention their constantly whining thug of a coach. Did he ever sit down? Did he smile even once? Was there ever 30 seconds when he wasn't begging for a call?

The program with some class won.

WVU is short, weak and get terrible position on rebounds. Not a good combination.

I'm pretty sure Jones went to bed last night thinking that he hadn't committed one foul.....what a whiner.:(

The officiating was indeed a mess, but it went both ways. I might be biased, but no way does WVU cut the Gophers' 8-point lead down to 2 without the refs intervening during that key stretch. The game doesn't get that close that fast without those 2 or 3 bad calls.

Southern Indiana is Kentucky and Northwest Indiana is Chicago. They really should just redraw the state lines so that little problem can be fixed. I don't want to bring politics into this discussion but politically Indiana is closer to the south than Michigan or Ohio.

Very true. I'm from just north of chicago, and traveling through the southern half of Illinois is also like being in an entirely different country from the northern half of illinois.

The real problem for WVA was that in their first two games they shot 89 free throws total...and on 25 in this game. We were the aggressors, we took it to them, we got into the paint, we crashed the offensive boards and we won because of it.

They had a couple of stretches when their reserves did this and they made some moves....but their starters played soft and they know it.

Our bigs played tough and really worked all night long...our gaurds didn't get bad fouls early like theirs did because they were shooting threes and we drove the lane and rebounded well.

Simple execution of our game plan and dictating the tempo and style of play...

Touche, Bad. Quick FYI, the really horrible ref (Daly, I think) is a west coast based ref who was also part of the Anaheim tournament last year. We were fortunate to avoid him last year, but the UCLA guys I sat near called him the worst ref in a gaggle of bad refs out west. His constant whistle blowing for inconsequential things in the second half last night made a great victory almost unwatchable for the last part of the second half. Clear example of the refs simply taking over a game. He is for sure one you want to avoid in post season.

I am no Thuggins fan, but I was with him in the refs being terrible. We might disagree who got the bad end of the deal, though.

Got that right. I'm always amazed when I actually see and hear the difference. Almost like going back in time when you travel south in Illinois.

It went both ways but I thought some of the calls were pretty bad. I thought the refs called a few too many fouls and were calling almost any kind of contact at some points. Poor free throw shooting lost it for WVA. I think the fouls were almost even at the end of the game. The announcers made a point to state the number of fouls for each team several times.

Definitely no flow to the game whatsoever, which could have been a major problem for us, but they really stepped up at the line. Basically the difference in the game, as WVU really bombed it from the line, multiple misses on 1-for-1 attempts that cost them second FT attempts. Both teams probably had big beef with the reffing, it just so happened we came out on top, so WVU is more angry about it lol.

I think the fouls were almost even at the end of the game.

They were dead even: 25 and 25. Now, some of those on the W.Va. board are claiming it's the when/what was called, not the total fouls, that made the difference. As some have noted here, and some of their more clear-headed posters have said over there, it came down to making free throws, which we did from the outset and they did not.

I agree with those who say the officiating was bad. I don't agree that one team got jobbed and the other got all the calls. Both teams got hosed several times.

25 called on us and 25 called on them. I don't see their beef at all. They couldn't stop Nolen and that is why they lost. First half we couldn't stop Mitchell but we made adjustments and that is why we won.

If the wvu kid was sizzling at the start of the game, it might not have been that close. I think some of their subs were real clumpers.

Give West Virginia this much credit: they exist because they DIDN'T want to be in the Confederacy.

The rest of the statement is correct, though.

In little over a week they will have one more thing in common with Virginia. Losing to the Gophers!

I have had an officiating class last quarter. We had a big 12 ref from Omaha (I'm not going to remember his name) come in and talk with us. He said that this year at the NCAA clinics they were told if someone hits the ground call a foul. As the rules are written it's hard to have that much contact and their not be a foul. They want them to start calling these, even flops. They were told to call every flop as a block. I saw that happen twice last night. The NCAA said that they are going to get a call on EVERY no call, but very few on bad calls.

He said the big thing they want to get away from is the idea that you need to protect the stars. So from start to finish every game is going to be called tight. At least until tourny time; calls always come slower at the end of the season.
