WR Javon Tracy Commits

From Ryan Burns' writeup, linked in his post:

2024 was a breakout season for Tracy as he went from catching 22 passes for 348 yards and two touchdowns as a redshirt freshman in 2023 to elevating himself into one of the best receivers in the Mid-American Conference and earning a first-team All-MAC selection at season end. He caught 57 balls for 818 yards with seven receiving touchdowns. He entered the portal on December 9th, and the offers flew in immediately. He held transfer offers from Minnesota, Michigan State, Indiana, Wisconsin, Georgia Tech, Pitt, Iowa State, Boston College, Florida State, West Virginia, Virginia Tech, Kansas, Baylor, Cal and Liberty.

Minnesota, of all those options, was able to have an "in" because of their tight ends coach, Eric Koehler, a former Miami (Ohio) coach himself. He played a part in recruiting Javon and his older brother Kenny to the Redhawks back in the day, so there was already a relationship and some trust built.

Fleck continues to excel in the portal😃
This has probably been discussed, but has anyone seen an estimate or study which shows how much the portal has increased a head coach's workload? Seems like there is never a work break for them, not even a brief one.

They make $$$$ so on one hand I don't feel a lot of sympathy. On the other hand, if they have family, the family needs their dad (or mom) around. If I recall, it was one of the reasons PJ got divorced from his 1st wife.

Hear that the last two weeks have been crazy for coaches.

I'm sure there is a lot of communication back and forth between the coach and DTAthletes about roster and then you add in finding players to fill holes.

Fleck seems out in front of things, but I feel there will be another rush of players from the 12 teams that are still playing as their seasons end and some coaching changes still to come.

I'll be curious to the mad dash after spring ball as well.

Good point and no I’m not aware of any type of study regarding this topic.

I would like to nominate @MaxyJR1 and @MNVCGUY as they seem to be two of our best portal posters and don’t mind doing extra work🤣. I’m also not nearly smart to tackle that subject matter 🤷‍♂️

Gonna pass on the extra work....but not hard to see how the current environment has increased the workload for coaches by a ton. In the past you had to recruit high school players which was very time consuming but also took place over a long period of time where you could establish relationships with the player and family over time.

Now, coaches still have to do all that but in addition to that they have to recruit the transfer portal which moves at lightning speed. Then on top of that they have to continually recruit their own roster just to make sure guys stay.

And all that is just the roster management part of the job....not sure how coaches find time for anything else (you know like practice and game prep) but they have too.
