Wow: Maturi gave women's basketball coach Borton contract extension on his way out

Um....

Ol' Woodward knew about the extension his first week on the job, if not before, and never said a word, so his claim that he would have announced it for the sake of transparency rings hollow and sounds slick. Joel was a grinder who was overmatched and either never understood the priorities of his job or couldn't master them. Woodward appears to be a slickster and I'm not sure he can deliver on much of anything. What I do know is that if Wood had announced it last spring or summer it would be long forgotten and he would have a much clearer path to do something about Tubby. By trying to coverup Maturi's ineptitude, Woodward has gummed up the works with Tubby. (Yes, Tuesday was huge fun but the issues haven't changed with Tubby or with a program that plays in memorable games once every couple of decades.)

So the same Joel Maturi who made a big deal about how he wouldn’t sign a contract extension offered by Bruininks because the new President should get to select his own AD gave Pam Borton a last minute extension? Didn’t he give her the last extension while they were on a trip to Italy? I hope this time she at least took him to Olive Garden.

I was thinking the same thing.

As one who comes and goes on a regular basis, it is absolutely unconscionable that an outgoing administrator would tie the hands of the one following with a borderline employee. He has every right to advocate for her with the successor, but is out of bounds locking in him in. It is infuriating to have "promises" made much less contracts signed. I have been on the Teague end of things a couple of times and this is almost always done to protect a favorite or problem employee with a moral or legal promise. Really bush league, Joel. I have cut you slack in the past, but this is really bad form.

LOL that was epic work on his part to not only combo up two different coaches, but then misspell the name of one as well in comedic fashion.

Aside from the fact that she was never Brenda Frese while she was here. Guy is a complete putz.

And not announce it.

The insanity of paying Borton 485K is just there on so many levels. I just did a quick check on the attendance for women's games:

18 games
Total attendance for home games 61,000 people
Season ticket price for the 18 games-$142 (adult non-premium) - price per game - $7.90

So using some simple math $7.90 x 61,000 = $481,900
Borton is getting $485,000?

Obviously some fans get in cheaper and some pay more. The point is that Borton's salary may well suck nearly every dime of ticket revenue the sport has. You can't get a women's coach to perform at this level for say $200,000 for a sport very few give a rip about?

Joel the jerk give the stiff coach an extension rather than letting the New AD make the decision. Then he takes a do nothing 500k a year that was created as way for him to bleed more money out of the U.

Amazingly she appears to make considerably more than Don Lucia.

Front page of the StarTrib today. I don't think it's overreacting to suggest Joel be dismissed from his cush job.

Gullibility. It lives here.

I'll admit it. That's me. Felt he was hammered too hard on a whole bunch of issues so I'd defend him. He lost me with his deal when I saw he wasn't as honorable as I thought; but this, and the way it was done, is mind-blowing. Not going to check on the timing, but it had to be done about the time Borton accepted the bid to that 3d rate tournament last year because she felt the Gophers wouldn't even get an NIT bid.

Of course if this deal was approved by the higher ups I'm not sure how blame solely rests with Maturi.

Announced attendance at women’s basketball games, which averaged 9,800 in 2003-04, has been below 3,500 the past three seasons. The program nearly broke even financially in 2003-04, but in 2011-12 operated at a deficit of almost $2 million.

“I’ve been here 11 years, and there’s always critics,” Borton said Wednesday. “I think there’s some people that really want you to fail around here. I think that’s just some of the culture. You can expend your energy worrying about that stuff. [But] you just really have to believe in what you’re doing, and work hard.”

Maturi's f__k ups have been well chronicled, but I attribute those to his ineptitude.

This fiasco is a total lack of integrity. A new low for Maturi.

I guess I see where Borton's coming from, and I'm not going to pretend to be an expert on our women's program...but to me, there's a distinct line between rooting for someone to fail and expecting better than mediocrity

In the voice of Cousin Eddie (Randy Quaid) from Christmas Vacation: "Joel Maturi....he's the gift that keeps on giving all year, Clark".

When Norwood Teague says, "I was not in on that" (quote from yesterday)... it depends on what your definition of is is... or "not" is / "that" is, "in on" is, etc.

Do some of you sincerely believe this is something Maturi snuck through?

I just really hope you give us little tidbits (from your vast knowledge of the inner workings of the Uof M) all day long. Please let us (in cryptic fashion) know that you are soooooooooo much smarter than us. What a d-bag. It still saddens me that you "work" for my favorite site.

To me you are the equivalent of Mr. Royston (not a compliment) from the FB side.

+1 to all of this (except the Royston comparison, which is a total insult to a decent, upstanding guy).

Personally I don't know the man so I should be careful how I criticize. However, his vocal displeasure in the curent U FB coach and his ready-and-willingness to discredit him at everyturn is something I find annoying. Might just be me though.

The axe-grinding can be a little loud at times, it's true, but at least he's speaking from a place of knowledge, experience, and connections.

Yeah, and that gives him perspective that I (just a rube) certainly don't.

It's your first part that seems to be all I hear and I end up tuning out the good.

Anyway, sorry for taking us off course, back to the WBB coach...

Where is missedlayup in all of this? How does he feel about it. I wish for him to show up and babble.

Combine this with the excessive amount of administrative employees( Bruininks deserves the brunt of the blame there) and it appears the university budget is little more than a slush fund for the administration and high ranking employees. Kaler deserves part of the blame however for this deal with Borton, Maturi's golden parachute, and the 800k UNC buyout. Good luck to him asking for more funding from the legislature. A good first step would be for him to start cutting costs beginning with administrative positions, and Maturi should be number 1 on the list.

With a Democratic legislature and Gov. good luck with that.

I agree with the slush fund thing.

Only Nixon could go to China, and only the Democrats can propose tough budget cuts and get away with it. Now's the time.
