per the STrib:

Outgoing Gophers Athletic Director Joel Maturi quietly signed women’s basketball coach Pam Borton to a two-year extension two weeks before he left his position for a consultant’s role in the office of the university president.

The university did not issue a release to announce the extension when it was signed. Borton acknowledged the new deal during an interview this week, and agreed that it was not publicized at the time she signed it.

Borton’s extension guarantees her a minimum of $485,000, not including benefits or incentives, for the next three seasons. The deal also means that if new AD Norwood Teague wanted to remove Borton after this season, the buyout would be slightly more than $500,000, compared to $167,500 without the extension.

Maturi could not be reached for comment.

Go Gophers!!

Teague said:
“I would want to announce it,’’ Teague said. “I don’t know what happened … I always want to be as transparent as possible. We’re not going to hide anything from [the media]."

...< chuckle >...

Go Gophers!!

That's wrong all the way around.

Maturi is still on the payroll. Time to call him on the carpet.

For the love of God . . . the Maturi carnage continues.

It turns out that Maturi's reign truly WAS a bomb - an atomic one it appears. A flash of destruction and carnage - followed by ongoing suffering after the fact marked by years and years of radiation sickness.

Maturi - the "gift" that keeps on giving . . . . sheesh !!!!

Probably a good thing Pam is gay, otherwise there might be a few rumors going around.

For the love of God . . . the Maturi carnage continues.

It's like being haunted by someone from beyond the grave - except he's still alive. Or it was like one of those presidential pardons they do just before they leave office. I mean, what else has he done that we don't know about? Did he leave booby traps and practical jokes for Norwood and his new staff?

What a f'n gong show at the U. I have to imagine Teague's jaw drops at the ineptitude he must find as he peels the onion back on the Maturi era. The lack of big money donor relationships that Maturi failed to nurture are classic but this Borton gem is incredible. That being said I have to imagine that Kaler also signed off on it? Now the buy-out is $400k more. No wonder the U lags in fundraising, they turn off would be donors with nonsense like this. Good grief.

Maturi's only disappointment was that he didn't get a chance to fire her after extending her. No one loved paying a good buyout like Joel. That man was such a disaster for our athletics department.

every time I think I've heard it all at the u another pathetic story like this drops. I hope the media pressures Joel and kaler for a reason on the extension and more importantly why they hid it. what a clown show

Gives an all new meaning to The University of Minnesota Extension Service.

I was surprised there wasn't more outrage when Maturi was given his lame duck high paying demotion. This guy is riding the gravy train like a member of the congress/senate.

Well at least her team showed up to soften some of the blow of the news tonight. Beating the #7 team in the country will change to tone for a little bit at least....

As some GH'ers have noted in the past, Maturi is the best gift the Univ. of Wisconsin could have given the U. Yes sir, Maturi, the Trojan Horse from Wisconsin.

Borton has been a below average coach here anyway. Wow, $485(K) per year? Pammy must be laughing their asses off while drinking wine! Never liked you one bit either Maturi! Go back to Chisholm and be a consultant for the iron ore industry. Go Twins and Vikings!

Teague is in great shape in his legacy here as to use a Maturi-ism "it's not like Teague is following Pat Richter at the U."

In Joel's defense, he'd probably been working on it since the women won their last NCAA game in 2009 and was just trying to tidy up his paperwork on the way out the door. NC buyout? Check. Tubby extension? Check. Borton extension? Check. Fan email from the last 15 minutes? Check. Working hard to the end. Thanks Joel!

So, you would prefer to have Cheryl Littlejohn back at the helm?

How about Pam Freeze?.....Coaching matters Dr Don.....You have been a Joel M apologist for years. When will you admit he was over matched and set the Athletic dept back at least a decade.........

Remember all the folks here defending paying Maturi's to be AD emeritus for a year.
Joel was a high school AD.

You haven't been following me lately m2s. Pam Freeze was here one year and skipped town. I have made numerous comments lately about Maturi and his ineptitude. Get your biases about me from the past out of your stagnant brain.

I like Joel, I like what he did. When I go to other gopher events besides men's basketball I see athletes supporting other athletes. He created a good atmosphere, a family atmosphere. I think fans could learn a lot from what he taught the students, that is in one word, support.
