Wow, just, wow....

Yeah and Gopherhole should not have published it. It is a throwaway comment in what should just be a fluff, good news piece.

NIU ranked #6 in fewest penalites in D1. Wisky #1, PSU #3 and the Gophers #42. Another reason to put some hope for Coach Kills program.

Oregon ranked #101. Auburn ranked #53. 7 of the past 10 BCS champions have ranked 75, 112, 82, 88, 118, 117, and 105.

LOL...that's awesome. So much for that whole "disciplined play" theory! Perhaps our staff should start encouraging penalties?

Hate to be so disagreeable (I know, "since when?") but I have to go ahead and disagree with you on this one. I think GopherHole was right to report and sort of had an obligation. It was an interview, it was said, and it is newsworthy to know both what outside recruits have heard about the team and to get a sense of what may have been going on in the locker room this year. It ain't earth shattering or anything but just kind of an odd interview to give for a kid that just got offered with about 60 days till national signing day.

I'm glad he said it. Time to put up or shut up. Start working and earning that scholarship. I hope some of these kids get some good eye openers. Show them what real work is and what it isn't. I don't think J Robinson would let the wrestlers run the show.

Remember last year's Michigan State game when we committed 17 penalties? That was probably the best game we played all year!

Highly talented teams can overcome a lot of mistakes and penalties. I would prefer a well disciplined team, one that doesn't hamper itself with penalties , especially with teams with marginal talent.

Yeah, let's not speculate some sort of causation where more penalties = more success. As a general statement, I would rather the Gophers NOT participate in activities that result in losing yards/giving free yards to the other team.

My guess is any wrestler trying to run the show would spend about a week trying to extricate himself from a pretzel-lock administered by Robinson.

I don't think anyone should take it as more penalties = more success. I hope people get that TALENT and coaching schemes have a far greater effect on wins and losses than buzzwords like "disciplined play", "hard work", "good kids" etc. that have become popular here over the past few weeks. The Gophers can never commit a penalty and have the nicest bunch of young men on the filed, but that doesn't necessarily correlate to victories.

Thinking about it logically:

More penalties are committed on offense than defense.
Teams that win are successful on offense
Teams that win are successful on defense
Therefore, teams that win are more likely to run more offensive plays than their opponent
Since penalties are more likely to be committed on offense, and successful teams run more offensive plays than their opponent, it gives successful teams more chances to commit penalties

It is not an exact correlation obviously, but it is easy to see why this could be the case.

There is a pretty good article in ESPN The Magazine regarding the whole penalties and success argument. It notes some of the stats that have already been shared here. It depends upon the coach as to how much they emphasize eliminating penalties. Some can't stand them and others want their guys playing so close to the edge that penalties are inevitable. One thing they are all very adverse to is any pre snap penalty. Those can always be avoided.
