per Andy Katz:

The University of Maryland is in serious negotiations to join the Big Ten Conference, sources told ESPN.com on Saturday.

If Maryland goes to the Big Ten, Rutgers of the Big East is expected to follow suit. The addition of Maryland and Rutgers would give the Big Ten 14 members as the league gears toward negotiations on a new media rights deal when its first-tier rights expire in 2017.

I really kind of like the idea of Maryland joining but really am kind of indifferent about adding Rutgers, I think I would rather go after a school like Louisville or UCONN before Rutgers.

Rutgers is all about the New York City TV market.

Nobody watches Rutgers in the east coast area. I don't like the idea of either school joining, I think the conference is perfect at 12, there is high competition in all sports, we are the richest conference in America. Why add 2 mostly underachieving athletic programs into an already successful conference and overload the conference with too many teams?

mnsports, you are totally full of b.s. on that. Rutgers is a big buck college that has big buck alumni. Watch the money, young man. When you grow up and can be on line after midnight without catching hell from your mama, you will see what I mean... It's all about more money!!! Period.

Does this mean the BTN will start showing games on TV? I mean, their repeat football shows every other hour are great, and the 1972 football games are even better. But I think Maryland may actually want to watch their team if they join the Big Ten.

Bingo, and so will Rutgers. bring on the$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Overall probably a decent fit, both land grant, similiar academics to the other B1G schools, expand into populated areas in NYC and BW.

One big benefit of this happening would be that the horribly mismatched Legends & Leaders divisions for football would be re-drawn. There's no reason that Illinois, Purdue, and Penn State would all be in the same division with Rutgers and Maryland, while the Legends have Michigan, MSU, and Nebraska.

My gut says they would just make it worse.

I hope this doesn't result in a 5 day Big 10 Basketball Tourney.

I hope this means we finally break the conference east and west instead of legends and leaders

Amelia blog: Tubby Smith on Maryland joining conference: "It's a good addition to the Big Ten."

“It’s a good addition to the Big Ten – if we’re going to expand, why not expand in that market,” he said. “Talk about the greatest city in the world in the DC and Baltimore area.”

I think it stinks.

I agree. This is the first pure money-play expansion move for the BT. I don't see how this is good for the conference at all. Yesterday I was e-mailing with some of my Badger friends (oxymoron I know) about the expansion and we all were in agreement on it, but one jokingly said he wouldn't have an opinion unless Nate Silver had some statistical analysis about it. Well, a day later here is Silver's analysis!

Expanding Eastward Could Dilute Big Ten Brand

Nate Silver is really trying to capitalize on that 15 minutes of fame...seriously dude you guessed 50 out of 50 on the election whoopie! Even the biggest idiot could have gotten 47 out of 50 not looking at any data.

you just called almost the entire republican party pollsters, political pundits and campaign strategists idiots. i completely disagree with you.

Under the right circumstances, there could be a college bball triple header in the DC area, all via the metro. This could be amazing.

Silver's last paragraph:

"The Big Ten may have expanded the size of its revenue pie, but it will be dividing it 14 ways rather than 12, and among family members that have less history of sitting down at the table with one another. In seeking to expand its footprint eastward, the conference may have taken a step in the wrong direction."

That's the part I don't get either, how is 1/14th of the total revenue going to be more than 1/12th?

I'm sure the march to 16 teams will be complete by the end of the decade. My bet is on Kentucky & Pittsburgh (unless ND changes course).

Maryland basketball fans are the worst. I'd rather be called an a-hole for eternity by Wisconsin that have pennies and batteries thrown at me. Wake Forest fans had to exit a game early a couple of years ago because they pulled off an upset in College Park and the fans started throwing the kitchen sink at their fans. They riot after every big win or loss. It's apart of their culture. They're the lowest of the low and now they're in the B1G. Badger fans are saints next to a Terp basketball fan. I don't want to say it's all Terp basketball fans but it's waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more than it should be. Again, it's a culture thing with that program. Gary Williams tried to stop it. Never happened.

Rutgers is interesting. The name suggests a small to midsized private college, but it's actually the University of New Jersey with 40,000 plus undergraduates and tons of alumni. The athletic program has seen football improve over the past decade plus, but has generally underachieved. The basketball program sits in the heart of one of the nation's basketball hotbeds with major talent in the state, Metro New York, and Metro Philadelphia. However, in its history Rutgers has only sent ten players to the NBA, none of whom got past journeyman status. Football drives expansion, but Rutgers brings little to nothing to the table for basketball.

I wonder if prime B1G New York area school is better for recruiting that C or D list recruiting destination in the Big East.

I think Rutgers basketball has a chance - chance - to leverage the move into a big improvement in their basketball program. They did bring in a top-25 class in 2011, and although they haven't panned out, it shows that given the right set of circumstances, they could compete. The question will be, how much pull will playing major midwest institutions (plus Maryland and Penn State) have on NYC kids?
