Looked a little deeper into in-state recruiting and came up with this. Some years The top 10 in MN were not all FBS players. Same with Neb., Iowa and Wisc. as well.

I think these people think the internet was invented in the last 5 years.
 

I thought we did fairly often.... it's just MN HS does not make a team / not all 5* type talent.

But we do keep a lot of top HS talent here....

Now, this would take a lot of work - (way more than I have time for) - but it would be interesting to take that "top 10 recruits" chart and figure out an average grade or star rating for each state's top 10 recruits. Get a better feel for how deep the talent pool is.

What I'm getting at is this: how does the #1 rated recruit in MN - or for that matter, the #4 or #5-rated recruit in MN - compare to the same level recruit in other states? In some situations, MN may be better off getting a higher-rated recruit from another state instead of landing the #5-rated recruit from MN.

so all of this talk about - "we got 6 of the top 10 recruits in MN" - may be great - but the Gophers might actually have been better off going after out-of-state recruits with more potential.

Possibly, if the star ratings in the “fly over” states were totally accurate. Most ranking sites don’t bother to rank a prospect in Timbuktu.

Thought it would also be interesting to look at average top 10 rating by conference footprint:
SEC -- .9395
ACC -- .9170
Big 12 -- .9155
Pac 12 -- .9070
Big 10 -- .8917

- In doing this I only counted the states where each conference has an institution as a member. So, DC does not count for anyone including Maryland.
- I also did it based on the number of schools in each state. ie the state of Michigan average Top 10 rating factored into the Big 10 score twice because there are two Big 10 schools in the state of Michigan.

He got those elite linemen from Florida...do you think the Florida State or Florida fans are all up in arms about those kids coming up north to Minnesota??

When your program has been down as long as Minnesota has, it's going to take some time to re-build the culture and create a tradition of winning. Look at where Wisconsin was in the 1980's and early 1990's and where they are now.

Minnesota was in the running for Carroll right until the last few weeks, in past years, Minnesota would not have even been considered at this point. We just need Fleck and the coaching staff to continue to recruit hard and hopefully they can carry that over on to the field and we start seeing more wins.

Might want to check your rankings. The final result was not the highest rated class after all. Brewster’s first class is/was according to 24/7.

Agree 100%. Fleck didn’t get him to commit, but he kept him in the fold which is far more important.

Rated and ranked are two different things. Technically he's right, last year had the highest composite rating of any close ever but was ranked lower than Brewster's class. But ratings have gotten higher over time. I think ranking is the better way to look at it.

I agree - but have read on here a million times all about how Claeys didn't deserve credit for the one class he signed.
