The kids seemed to enjoy playing for him and just for kicks say Maturi had no alternatives but to keep Horton. Horton had kept most of the recruits that Brewster had committed. Actually, he did a great job. I can think of LaCrosse ( who decommitted and signed with Illinois) and maybe one other who decommitted after Brewster left. He also had mentioned that Gray would move from WR to QB
in the Spring. My guess is Ju-Ju,Ure and some other players would have stayed. This is pure speculation on my part and has nothing to do with the job coach Kill is doing. IMO Horton would have got the academic situation under control probably got us 6-7 wins just because the kids would have been playing under the same system. He had a good staff that were also good recruiters and I think the class he would have had a chance to fill out would've been equal too Kills class.

Possibly, but the short term would have not fixed anything for the future. Recruiting, stability, etc.

Would you chose a fringe bowl game with Brew's players this year.... or a stable better program for years to come? I chose the latter.

This requires WAY to many "what if's" to be worth doing. Might as well wonder "I wonder if Mike Leach would have gotten us to a bowl game" because both require you to assume outcomes that cannot be assumed.

wow.... really.... a thread like this?

Kill is the coach, support him... threads like this are a waste of time and energy...

Also, considering that 10 B1G teams are bowl eligible, a couple of 6-6 teams are not going. We weren't going to be better than that...

Jeff Horton will be long remembered fondly for the work he did in bringing the team home last year. He was a breath of fresh air
and the wins he achieved were great. Kill said he would have liked to have retained him but could not. He parted on great terms with the U and the football community. Very few coaches have left the school like that in recent decades. Let's just leave it at that! LOL

I'm inclined to say 'no', as I don't believe the recruits who might have stayed would have made too big a difference in year 1. Also, we have no idea who would have been brought in as D-Coordinator, O-Coordinator, etc. Presumably we would have stuck with Horton's offense while he was OC, and so that would have been the strength of the team.

Really though, Metrolax said it best.

Well said...

Gray needed this year to get acclimated to being a QB and the OL was/is a work in progress...

For the long term, the U did the right thing and it is best to simply be thankful for his part in being an encouragement for the students at that time.

Jeff Horton has a 22-53 career record as a head coach, I believe 2-19 over the last 21 games he was a head coach. He was over 0.500 twice out of 6.5 years. While I appreciate what he did here and I respect the man and wish him nothing but success, there is nothing from his record that would imply he would have had a winning season this year.

He would have had consistency of system probably, but who knows if he could have gotten decent coordinators to come here. Or if he would have gotten any of the recruits that Kill added. And I really don't think any of the players that left would have stayed just because Horton was hired. It's not like he would have had a pile of Juniors hiding in his back pocket he could have added to the equation. The team was still small, slow and young.

We hired Tim Brewster who was not a winning head coach and he didn't work out (obviously wasn't even a head coach). There was no way they would have hired a coach who didn't have at least a close to winning record as a head coach in D1 FBS.

If Horton did the same thing with any other team no one would have EVER thought to hire him here. Just because he happened to fall into that position here wasn't a reason to hire him.

What's next? wren saying that Mason would have had us in a bowl game? Really why would you want to even discuss this?

If Michigan goes to the BCS only 1 team needs to find an at-large home. Which thus far looks easily doable.

Are you trying to be cute killjoy? You're flopping over there in the corner again. Poor form on your part killjoy. "...And that's ANOTHER killjoy grand mall flop..." Does the state even let you drive killjoy? You're going nowhere fast when ever you try to seize the day with one of your pointless and humorless "wren-fit-hits..." Just another killjoy pathetic grand mall flopping attack... You're a pretty lame one killjoy. These flops of yours have got to stop. Now take your meds and try to get it under control killjoy...

What the hell is your problem? Using Kill's medical condition to rip on a poster? Some real class you have there, Wayne. What's next? Going to use his rosacea or maybe his bad teeth? At least those are things he can fix, unlike the former.

(P.S. It's grand mal, not grand mall, and that term is now obsolete in favor of tonic-clonic. At least use the correct terms if you're going to be a d-bag no-class idiot.)

With killjoy he does his thing at the "grand mall' when he attends the d-bag, no-class, idiotic conventions there. He's disturbed, but not quite as unstable as the way you present and represent yourself dopodoll. Is killjoy another one of your voices/faces/personalities since you respond for him?

You have really been in a melt-down phase dopodoll. Get some help. You sound extremely "on the edge..."

Perhaps you can locate some place that will charge you on a sliding fee scale since times are so tough for you... Now...you are dismissed. And: stay out of my yard!

Jeez guys all I did was bring up a "what if " You do realize Maturi gave Horton an interview.

Could players like JuJu and Eure stayed eligible if the academic ship was as leaky as reported? What would the transfer situation have looked like? Would Horton have run the same offense and who would have been our pro-set QB?

Impossible to prove the negative in any instance, but there are so many moving parts here that it is difficult to assemble the negative proposition to attempt to disprove.

You can't have watched the Michigan and Purdue games and think Vince Lombardi would have gotten this team, even with a few more recruits, to a Bowl Game.
