Why should any of us care about the loyalty of Iowa or Wisconsin fans
Were Gopher fans here, correct, so why should we give two sh!ts about Iowa or Wisconsin fans loyalty. I know this topic is trying to strike up a conversation about the Gopher fan base and the Iowa and Wisconsin fan bases if they would have to go through what we have gone through with coaching changes and losses but it is all hypothtical. Both are college towns with no pro sports although Wisconsin enjoys state wide support so it is difficult to compare the what if's scenarios. That and they have enjoyed more recent sustained success. We already kind of know the answer anyways, if they had to go through a ton of losing the fan bases would wain and start to taper off, that happens to all sports teams following's or fan bases when lack of success set's in just ask the Twins marketing and ticket sales departments. They those other two programs may have more that hang on but they would still lose people.
We should be happy to have the fans we have that have stuck with it like many us have, 18 years and counting on season tickets so I and a lot of us here, are starting to see more familiar faces every year at the games. That said, I think the Gopher fan base is growing because college sports in general is more affordable to the average fan and family to attend. Go to a Vikings game and look around, very few kids and family's at the games because the tickets are expensive a well as the parking and concessions and then all of the offensive language and swearing or cursing you hear and the general rudeness of the fans. You just don't really see that extent of it at college games.
At Gopher games you see a lot of kids and husbands and wives, whole family's, at least you have since the Gophers moved to the TCF bank on campus stadium. Same with road games, many more family's than at pro games.
I for one am happy that we are starting to see the word of mouth spread and more people and Minnesotans in general are going to Gophers football games and at least giving them a chance for their entertainment dollars. Gone are the days of 16 to 26,000 actual people at the games for non-conference games in the BO ridden stinky Metro dump.
The more people get others to come out the more that come back and the word of mouth on the Gophers as an attraction is spreading. Now that the football on the field is starting to match the level of effort and we have some coaching staff stability things seem to be moving in the right direction, at least that is my perception of the current state. The next step is to start winning against our rivals and not just being competitive, and I for one feel we are getting to the stage where we are getting there.
