Auburn
  • New Year's Day Bowl Game
  • Auburn better than Penn St.
  • End the season on a positive note
Penn St.
  • Every Big Ten win is bigger
  • Penn St. better than Auburn
  • Gophers undefeated at the time

The Penn State win / 9-0, at home at TCF felt like something people will tell their kids and grandkids about, as hopefully a transformational moment for Gopher football and the week we were on top of the world.

Beating Auburn would have much less of that, though the afterglow might persist well into September or October 2020 instead of dulling a week later.

Not even close, but it will be a nice win in the bigger scheme of things

Short term yes, long term no. Will help build more hype for next season. People will talk about being at PSU game for a long long time tho

No bowl game other than playoff and maybe rose could ever be bigger than any regular season win.

Id argue not even Rose Bowl.

the Georgia Southern win would be bigger than beating Auburn. Without beating Georgia Southern, we aren’t playing Auburn.

I think there are multiple perspectives that can be applied to this question.

A win over Auburn may turn some SEC-fans into potential B1G recruits/players, but that is 2021 impact at this point. And the attention span of High School Kids remains for ever debatable.

My conglomerate conclusion is that the PSU game will have more staying power in the long run. It is already the second of two giant killings vs PSU in the post-Holtz era. I think the impact of the PSU game will out live this bowl game. Registered a No vote.

After all, not many not on this board or similar know that Minnesota is 1-0 v Alabama. I am not sure how many more will grant a higher level of attention to being 1-0 v Auburn after the same length of time.

Though both have some prestige, with perhaps a slight tip of the hat to Auburn in the ESPN congested world, in the long run the PSU game will be seen as the primary stepping stone. The Auburn game, if won in a similar fashion will be seen as secondary to the PSU game. If the Gophers play well but lose, the damage will be less than if the PSU game had been a loss. If the Gophers come out and destroy the Tigers in every aspect of the game, it might be the program establishing event we'd all love. The counter of that is, "the Gophers just aren't there yet." That result is not that much different from the thinking of coat tail fans to outright detractors going into the game.

Would have been something we would have told our kids about had we beaten WI or Iowa. But, we played prevent defense versus Iowa in the first half and freaking punted for the WI 35 with two yards to go on fourth.

Thanks for the feedback, not what the thread is about but we appreciate you repeating this same crap over and over again in every single thread regardless of topic.

Voted No. Penn State game felt bigger with the buildup and the fact that it got us to 9-0. A win over Auburn would be huge but I don't think it would quite rise to the level of the Penn State game.

The Gophers have beaten Penn State in 2 of the last 3 contests and had a 4 game win streak against Penn State in the early to mid 2000s. The win this year was a really good win but not a program changer. A win over Iowa or Wisconsin would be a better win in my book. I voted yes on this poll.

The Penn St. win is 2.5 times bigger than an Auburn win. Thread closed.

I agree with anyone who thinks there is more than one perspective to consider:

-Probably a more meaningful win to Minnesota fans and their faith in the team, to have gotten the Penn St. win.

-Probably a bigger deal on a national level to have the visibility and momentum (for recruiting) that would come with a win vs Auburn.

I expected the Gophers to beat Penn St. and thought it would show that they're arriving. They did just that, and it was a big deal - but it wasn't a surprise to me. Though i expect them to give a good showing, i don't expect them to beat Auburn. It could restore a lot of momentum lost over the last few weeks of the season with the losses to IA and WI. It would be a huge upset especially taking into consideration that Auburn has made such a big deal out of their NFL draft prospects committing to play this game. For this reason, i voted "Yes".

*1,000th post on the last night of the decade. That's pretty cool.

Happy NYE, Ski-U-Mah, RTB! :)

Very well stated. I would also add another aspect. To beat Auburn is to beat a team with even more athletic talent than any other team we played this season. It would be a remarkable coaching accomplishment and would make me very optimistic about the next few years as we still have some recruiting to do to catch up with Wisconsin, Iowa, and Nebraska.

That's easy to say when the Gophers have won 3 straight bowl games. There was a time not too long ago when the Gophers lost 7 straight bowl games (I was at 4 of them) and there is pressure to win. Bowl games matter.

From a brutal logic perspective, I guess. Maybe.

Emotionally it's not even close to true. A win vs. Auburn tomorrow and it's 8 months of us super psyched about the clear best season in most of our lives. Many new season tickets are sold. Our seniors last memory is super positive. The hype boat is rowing at Prefontaine Pace into 2020. Coaches can walk around the South and the Midwest on recruiting visits and beat their chests a bit about taking down mighty Auburn. The nationally maligned B1G West taking down the SEC West.

There's a fair chance 9-3 Minnesota (loss to GaSo) would have gotten this game anyway, and we would still be super hyped and have long forgotten that hiccup in September after going to 10-3 with a win over Auburn.

Without hesitation, I voted Yes. Reasons:
1. There’s only a few teams left to play a game and a win will be a national conversation when college football has the spotlight.
2. It will give us 11 wins, the most since 1904.
3. It will give us a 2-2 record against top 20 teams.
4. It will give us a .712 record against the SEC (5-2).
5. The Penn State game is history, and my dad gum chili is super nova hot!

Yes the Big 10 win over Penn State was huge. However the SEC looks down on us. A win over the SEC Auburn team will show them that the Big 10 is nothing to sneer about. In my estimation to prove them wrong would be huge and would make a statement.

No. Not even close.
Rivalry games are always more important.
Don't you people know anything?

Power 5 Summary so far:
SEC 4-1 (80%)
B1G 3-2 (60%)
PAC12 3-2 (60%)
ACC 4-5 (44%)
Big 12 0-5 (0%)

this is why the SEC looks down on the B1G, and every other conference.

it would be a big deal for a lot of reasons if the Gophers can pull off the upset.

Short term, the Penn State win will be the bigger happening, it fired up Gopher Nation and raised some eyebrows nationally. But long term, a win over a powerhouse SEC team would not only raise some eyebrows, it would open the eyes wide of future recruits. So yes a win over Auburn
will be more important as it will legitimize the win over Pen State and allow our coaching staff to get into the living rooms of some of the best prospects in the country.

The debate is moot since the PSU win already happened...in seriousness though, yes because it would mean more nationally.

Easily Penn State. The build up and win completely changed the perception of the program. Had we lost that game, we would have hardly scratched the CFP rankings, had very little hype for the Axe game (and no College Gameday) and, assuming the rest of our results were the same, wouldn't even have the opportunity to play a team like Auburn. Beating Auburn would be great for setting the tone for the offseason, but it won't have many consequences outside of that.

You failed to mention a win against Auburn would result in a freed order of coconut shrimp with any entree order at Outback Steakhouse.

Yes. Auburn is a very good team and had a more recent NC. Major helmet school with a great reputation. Would add to this years credibility as a place to play. So, naturally, the answer is yes. This would be an even bigger game than PSU. It is in my eyes every bit as large as the PSU game.

Wonderful question. Could answer several ways on both sides of it. Suppose since i always value winning away from home, against a established SEC team on New Years day seems like a dream. Of course seeing the atmosphere at the PSU game gives me chills to this day and has its own bias.
