World Baseball Classic

I’m not going to feel bad after the several bush league move the Dominican team made. If Turang doesn’t drop that double play, Machado takes out his legs. And Caminero ran right at Harper on that 3rd strike drop in the 9th.

Fun game, but that umpire was awful. Strike zone was all over the place.
I was a bit surprised they were not using the challenge rule for strikes. I have seen it in AAA and it's a beneficial addition to the game. The DR received two critical strikeouts on pitches that should have been called a ball.

It has to be something that was put in place awhile back where they decided it wouldn't be used in the 26 WBC. It was in AAA last year, teams have been using it in Spring Training for the past two seasons and it'll be a part of the MLB regular season in a couple of weeks.

I’m not saying it was a strike but the type of movement these guys get on their pitches it’s not surprising they’re missed.

Definitely not hittable where it ended up and a freaky pitch, but IMO, umpire has seen it before and has to do better. It worked in our favor this time but could go other way next time. Automated balks and strikes will bring relief to umps, too.

Luis Arraez with a single to put Venezuela ahead 4-2 in the top of the 7th. Venezuelan ex-pats have filled the stadium in Miami.

These umps sure like the low strike which isn’t a strike
Ask any ump and they will tell you the bottom of the strike zone is the toughest area to gauge. When you add in the insane movement some of these pitchers have, it becomes even more difficult.

I've seen it suggested before that umps should be connected to pitchcom so they know what kind of pitch is coming. Then they don't get fooled by the pitch the same way hitters do.

That’s actually a good idea. Never thought of that

The Astros can just borrow them some garbage cans.

I have an even better idea for having accurate balls and strikes....

I actually hate the challenge system for balls and strikes. I would prefer to have a mix of the automated strike zone and the human element we previously had. So pick a specific distance of variability, lets say 1 inch. Any missed call more than 1 inch is automatically corrected. Anything within an inch is left as is. No challenges.

It allows for a little variability from one ump to the other but prevents anything egregious from happening. I'm using 1 inch as an example, not sure what the best distance would be. Maybe 1/2 inch, not sure.

I'm guessing umpires would be thrilled to turn it all over to computers. (Not sarcastic).

Harper finally shows up with a 2 run bomb to tie things up heading to top of 9

The US just didn't hit well. I wish some of the players that took off their 2nd place medals showed that much emotion during the actual tournament.
