MADISON (WKOW) -- A woman involved romantically with former UW Badgers basketball coach Bo Ryan filed a notice of claim with Attorney General Brad Schimel, maintaining UW officials improperly released her email of concern about the coach, and improperly disclosed her name, wrecking her career.
The May 2 filing is a legally required step to any potential lawsuit against UW officials. The notice states Van Ert has claims against UW-Madison Chancellor Rebecca Blank, UW Athletic Director Barry Alvarez, members of the Board of Regents, and others. It states Van Ert could be compensated for damages resulting from both state and federal violations.
"Ms. Van Ert's identity was not subject to public disclosure," attorney Bruce Schultz writes of Van Ert's claim. He notes Van Ert's name was even redacted from the March public release of her whistle-blowing type email, but later disclosed by a UW-Madison official.
"Van Ert has been the subject of harassment and ridicule...had to close her business," the notice of claim states concerning Van Ert's work as a state-licensed massage therapist.
University officials have said they found Ryan misused no university resources when he and Van Ert would rendezvous during some of Ryan's out-of-town scouting of players. But in the notice of claim, Van Ert said the university investigation was flawed.
"The 'investigation' was not thorough or conducted in good faith," the notice of claim states.
The document says Van Ert's primary concern was with Ryan's behavior, a claim she repeated during an April 2015 interview with UW officials, after her February email. "Van Ert repeated her concerns that Mr. Ryan mistreats women and is not a good role model," the notice of claim states. The document includes no references to any specific instances of Ryan's alleged actions.
