Maybe it's injuries that aren't quite literal, but:

Since he's already used his redshirt season, Mellusi would likely need to produce medical documentation of an injury that prevents him from playing to receive another year of eligibility from the NCAA.

If this really is about physical injuries ... seems like he could take a shot at submitting the documentation and not "step away from the team".

Not to say it is anything negative either, guys bust their ass all year round, he could be tired of the grind.
