Wisconsin Junior Wally Ellenson To Attend Goipher-Buckeye Game

I checked out his YouTube clips, they are exactly the opposite of what you would expect from a guy named Wally from Wisconsin. This kid dunks, and dunks, and occasionally puts in a layup. There's videos of him putting in a between the legs dunk, a nice reverse dunk, and a 360 dunk. What I did not see, was even one highlight of Wally shooting a jumper. He certainly has the hops to play in the Big Ten, and if he can shoot, he'd appear to be a nice target for 2012. Here's hoping we impress him with a W on Sunday.

Can we please get some WE WANT WALLY chants from the student section???

Should we dress up like Eddie Haskell while we're at it?

i mean this kid isnt even a 4 star recruit. pretty sure we didnt even do a we want tyus when he was there. just sayin

Is this the kid with the helicopter dad? I thought I heard some rumors.

Well his Dad was an accomplished.....

player and has coached for many years, so he certainly knows about big time basketball. He may have gotten a bad rap when he moved the family back to Rice Lake (his wife's home town) from Eau Claire (where he was coaching) with 4 talented kids leaving with him.

If the kids do play with Pump 'n Run this summer I'm sure he'll me one of the coaches at some level.

Tubby does have a pretty good track record with fellow coaches.

I have never heard anything negative about Ellenson's father, I would be surprised if he is a problem for whatever program Wally ends up playing for in college. The father, John, started his college career at Marquette, but finished his playing days at UW.

I'm at the Rice Lake-Hudson game to watch Wally. Associate head coach Ron Jirsa is sitting with me and Wally will be at the Gopher game tomorrow.

Ole - what's your assessment of Wally as a potential Big Ten player? Is Bo showing any interest in him? As a legacy, would he be a slam dunk for WIS if Bo offers?

I have never actually seen Wally play in person. I almost went to Hudson with Monter tonight to watch, but it didn't work out. I know two pretty reliable people who think Ellenson is good enough to play in the Big 10.

I have heard that UW would be in good position in Wally's recruitment if they were to offer, but they only have one more spot available and that will be saved for JP Tokoto until he decides. Ellenson is not the athlete on the wing that Tokoto is, but he could fill a need for UW if Tokoto decides to go elsewhere. I would guess that the UW staff will stay in contact with Wally in the coming months, in case they eventually need to make a more serious push to land him.

Thanks. Always appreciate the insight.

Rice Lake def Hudson 59-40. Wally Ellenson a quiet night of 13 pts 6 rbs. From TC Hoops Czar.

I think he's........

legit.........he has some explosion to his game, and a nice storke at the foul line. He only tired 1 three, but they didn't need him there against this team.

Offer him before Wisky gets wise, and we'll start some pay back for losing Leuer and Taylor. (... know it wasn't on Tubbys watch)

He has 8 D1 offers already.......so lots of people believe he's going to be good.

the Hoops Czar was tweeting from the Rice Lake - Hudson game so may have a full writeup tomorrow on his site.

I share the surprise that Ellenson's highlight reel is mostly dunks. Can anyone comment on his overall quickness (can he defend at the Big 10 level) and his shooting ability including free throws?

CDH27, you can watch him play St Cloud Apollo on a web cast. It was one of the Border Battle games. Go to this link http://tchoops.blogspot.com/2007/06/czars-profile.html On the right side you'll see Border Battle, scroll down and you'll see the Rice Lake game. Click the"watch it here". You can then get your own observation.

I have seen Wally play for the past 4 years. Great athleticism. If there is one knock on his game its his handle. Not a great dribbler, but does see the floor well and will get rid of it. Is a better defender this year than he was the past few years.

Another very good Wisconsin player whose stock will rise this summer when he plays for the WI Playground Warriors is 6'1" point guard Ryan Benoy from Baldwin-Woodville. Coaches kid, very smart player. Averaging 20 ppg and 5 assists as a junior. Ranked number 19 in Wis. class of 2012...huge upside and will probably be 6'2"-6'3" when he's done growing. Beat Wally's team last year in the Regional finals hit the game winning FT's with 6 seconds left in OT. Tell you one thing, if he ever got on the Gopher radar and they offered, he would jump at it...been a huge Gopher fan his whole life.

Wally's dad Jon is from Menomonie and I have known him for a long time. He was a great HS player and a great person. He had an nice career in college, played at Marquette with Tony Smith who went on to play with the Lakers. Jon left Marquette shortly after Majerus left. I have seen Wally play and I am not quite sure about his ability to play in the big ten. Also, I have seen Benoy play many times, nice kid but I don't see him being close to D-1.

Another thing I liked about Wally.......

was his feistiness! He went to the floor several times (in a game he didn't have to) took it in traffic (the best sign of a player to me is can he finish in the paint)and he see the floor well, and is a good passer. Plus the defense was paying special attention, and he didn't back down, just worked very hard to get open.

Someone asked about his defense....well he does reach around a bit and then tries to sprint out for the fast break.....but with his athleticism, he's farther ahead on that end that Hoff was. He can close out with his jumping skills and cause problems for opposing shooters.

Wally (and the whole family it looked like) had better seats than Kevin McHale.

Thanks for the link to the game in St. Cloud. Ellenson is certainly athletic and he has a nice looking shot. His release and shot remindes me a little bit of Hoffarber with his left handed release and high arc on the ball. He appears to be better at creating his own shot than Blake at that stage in their careers, but I don't sense that he is the dead eye shooter that Blake is (of course who is). I also like that he can stop and hit a mid range jump shot which has become a lost art. Wally plays bigger than 6-4 or 6-5 based on the four blocked shots during the game. It was disappointing to see him miss three out of four free throws near the end of the game, but the 3 point game winner was certainly impressive.
