Should we be surprised at all that they are using fuzzy math to justify the spending?

"Part of the argument from McIntosh and lawmakers supporting the bill came from a report from a 2022 marketing report from eConsult Solutions that claimed each UW-Madison football game brings $19 million of economic impact to Dane County...

The type of hired marketing reports that eConsult Solutions provides are consistently rejected by sports economists who point out the flaws in the math used and how they do not factor in items such as diverted spending, crowding out effects and the costs related to large events and facilities.

Sports teams and athletic programs then use those marketing reports to justify public spending, the UW-Madison athletics officials are doing with AB 1034, which does not have a fiscal estimate attached yet."

Hmmm. So a Wisconsin resident doesn't spend money on Badger football and that money just disappears from the economy, so here comes the government to save them! It's too bad those poor Wisconsin tax payers don't have any other fun, local ways to spend that money jingling around in their pockets. This is so goofy it's pretty much guaranteed the state of Minnesota does it next! :p:rolleyes:

Those locals love to buy and wear badger and packer gear for all occasions. They were right to ramp up cheating in the early 90s and probably will be right again.

nick sherly showed me the state of mn could afford to buy the best roster in college football five times over without raising taxes

I'd say there's 0 chance this state would do something like that.

Go up to someone in Mpls who isn't a sports fan and see how they'd feel about spending that money on athletes who are already getting a free education, place to live, and tens/hundreds of thousands of dollars yearly.

Won’t happen at the U. For context people should google the Luke Buer interview with some old regent. The old regent guy states the board feels as tho it is their job to keep an eye on the U as it pertains to their region. Brutal.

This is not NIL. (To me, that acronym is for specifically third-party NIL deals.)

This is the House Settlement saying each school can directly provide $20.5M to student-athletes from the athletic department ... and then schools like Minnesota, Wisconsin, etc. are struggling to suddenly come up with an extra $20M per year to do it.

So Wisc state gov is just going to give Madison that extra money. Must be nice.

We had to invent a new fee to take the money from our general student body.

On top of a fresh new tuition hike for 2026-27, I just saw they're proposing.

Never been to a wedding in WI where at least one person in a semi-formal environment is sportin’ a packer jersey.

TBH I wish our state government to send our athletic department 20 million a year for NIL
I find it interesting that Wisconsinites, who like touting they have lower taxes than Minnesota, will embrace subsidizing Badger sports, while Minnesotans, who are used to more public spending, will never tolerate supporting Gopher sports in the same way.

It really is ass backwards if you think about it

It certainly could. A $100M or so annual roster budget for Gopher football would be a drop in the bucket against the state's $2.5-3B projected surplus for 2026. It was also affordable in prior years when the state ran a multi-billion dollar surplus.

They could make Gopher Football the most expensive sports team on Earth and still give money back to taxpayers.

It's not for NIL, it's to help the university offset the revenue share bill right? So basically the state is paying for the player salaries not associated with NIL? Not being a smart butt, just making sure I understand things.

You're good ! NIL is really a front for pay to play so it's more money that their programs will have to go after talent that they otherwise wouldnt
