Wins by Minnesota Starting QBs in history

Brock Jensen 2010-2013 set the standard at NDSU at 48-5 as a starter.

. . . never to be broken, whoops

Then, Easton Stick 2015-2018 went 49-3.

Trey Lance 16-0 could stick around and break it, but not likely.

Between Jensen and Stick, Wentz went 20-3.

Had leidner gone to ndsu he’d be starting in the NFL. When ndsu called he told him I am going to MN.

I love that MN was 5 and 1 in games Leidner played but did not start. Alway thought he was a great change of pace QB.

And yet there were losses less painful...

True.

It's interesting to factor in the quality of opposition.

I seem to recall both Mason and Kill being criticized for scheduling non conference cupcake opponents.

Also, what year was it the B1G make the schedule change, going from 4 non conference games to 3? Was it 2016, Claeys only full season as head coach?

No one cares play a real schedule

SO, what we do know ids Leidballs is the greatest Gopher QB of all time.

CAREER: Played in 47 career games (29-18 record) and started 41 (24-17 record as a starter) • rushed 446 times (15th all-time in school history) for 1,495 yards (third in school history for a quarterback) and 33 career touchdowns (most in school history for a quarterback, fourth for any player) • passed for 7,287 yards (third most in school history) and 36 touchdowns (fifth in school history) • ranks fifth all-time in school history in completion percentage (56.4), second in completions (580) and second in attempts (1,029) • only Minnesota quarterback ever to pass and rush for 30 career touchdowns • ranks second all-time in total offense with 8,882 yards.

Great team player and leader.

So I went and looked at data for some notable and most post 2000 QBs. Not all the info is fully detailed but you can kinda guestimate.

  • Sandy Stephens, 1959-1961, 18 wins over that time period
  • Tony Dungy, 1973-1976, 23 wins over that time period. Main playing time was 75 and 76, where the Gophers went 6-5 both years
  • Rickey Foggie, 1984-1987, 23 wins over that time period.
  • Cory Sauter, 1994-1997, 13 wins over that time period. Main playing time was 94-97. Gophers won three in 95, four in 96 and three in 97.
  • Asad Abdul Khaliq, 2000-2003, 28 wins over that time period. Split time in 2000.
  • Bryan Cupito, 2004-2006, 20 wins over that time period
  • Adam Weber, 2007-2010, 17 wins in games started
  • MarQueis Gray, 2011-2012, 6 wins in games started
  • Max Shortell, started and won only the Syracuse game I believe in 2012.
  • Phillip Nelson, 2012-2013 9 wins in games started
  • Mitch Leidner 2014-2016, 22 wins in games he started in
  • Conor Rhoda, 2016-2017, 4 wins in games started
  • Demry Croft, 2017, 2 wins in games started
  • Zack Annexstad, 2018-Current, won 3 games started
  • Tanner Morgan, 2018-Current, won 15 games started
Not sure if this is accurate but if it is:
Khaliq 28
Foggie 23
Dungy 23
Liedner 22
Cupito 20
Morgan 20

Morgan now tied for top 5 if this is accurate

According to the Gophers’ official football media guide, Leidner had 24 wins as the starting QB.

AAK had 22 wins as a starter.
Morgan has 23 thru yesterday.
Dungy had 16 wins
Foggie had 20 wins
Cupito had 20 wins

So Morgan all-time winning starter soon.

I think Morgan is at 23. In the Minnesota Game Notes before Maryland they had Morgan with the highest win percent in program history at .688 (22-10).

Leidner might as well be the face of the Kill/Claeys era:

Tough, strong, a little under-skilled. Sometimes underwhelming and other times over-performing. Like 2014 they lost to a mediocre Illinois team, then shellacked Iowa and went toe-to-toe with eventual National Champion OSU.
David Cobb with the fumble backed up to our end zone is what I remember from that afternoon

Tanner Morgan, 2018-Current, won 15 games started
Am I misreading something or is this light for Morgan?

he had 11 wins in 2019 and so far this year has 5, plus another 3 in 2020 and a few more in 2018.

Does ML7’s win total count the Rutgers game that was “basically a loss”?

There have been so many wins* in the last 15 years I can't keep track.

Correct. 4 in 2018: IU, Purdue, WI and GT.

if the gophs average 6.5 wins the next two years and tanner sticks around...
That's asumming that he holds onto the starting job if he sticks around... not exactly a gimme.
