Will the next starting RB please step up?

One issue - If RB 'A' only plays on running plays, and RB 'B" only plays on passing plays, you are basically telling the defense what you're going to do.

So, if Williams is the best at pass pro, they have to give him a few carries or you're showing your hand to the defense whenever Williams comes into the game.

and - some might say - this offense is already too predictable. don't need to give the defense any more help.

Lots of pro teams do this all the time. Different back for 3rd down. Yes, you can occasionally hand it off to that back.

You can potentially get around this by utilizing play-action, which we do, but also plays like draws and screens.

The latter ... have we run one the entire year?? I don't think Sanford knows what they are.

Is Cam Wiley redshirting, haven't seen him at all the last two games?

Think there was a TE screen once this year.

Really becoming less and less of a fan of depending on a single star RB, when they are such a fragile position. See the same thing with the Vikings and Dalvin Cook.
Offenses get "spoiled" by relying on a single back of Mo's caliber.

We all know what happens when you lose your RB for the season.

There's a lot of woulda, coulda. If they had cut down on the number of plays, Mo could still be playing. If they had cut the number of carries for Mo, the other backs can gain experience, etc...

Not the worst case, but a possibly "worse case" would be if we lose Thomas, Bucky, and Williams. That would leave us with Cam Wiley. In that case, if you are handing the ball off to Cam Wiley 20 times a game, he would probably learn to run the ball better behind our line with that many game reps.

He's fast enough to be a good running back, but his vision, patience, and his willingness to accelerate through defenders is where he appears weak. In theory, some of those things could be learned.

And he has breakaway potential for anytime the line does make a hole you could drive a Hummer H2 through.

I really think the key is keeping these guys fresh. I hope Bryce keeps playing the 3rd down RB/blocker role (I think we'll use more wildcat and pass more), and I would spread the rest of the carries between Bucko, Cam and Ky Thomas. Injuries aside, young RBs really lose a step when they take too many hits.

I think that goes both ways too.

You cut the amount of work you give a star player... you cut the opportunities for successful plays.

To be honest, 2020 was the first year in a while that the running game was not a two or three headed attack. Guessing that's Sanford?

Definition of coaching means taking the available players and create schemes where individual players uses his God given abilities to benefit the team. Not sure we have the “coaches” to qualify under that definition.

If I have to hear Beth Mowins or anyone go on about that stupid Bucko vs. Bucky thing again I will throw up. Fleck needs to let that BS go and leave the kid alone.
I was pretty happy when she left Big Ten Network -- until I realized that with her at Fox they just assign her to all the lower tier B1G games they produce.

fixed

Sorry, nothing personal, this is business.

Maybe part Sanford and maybe part Mo. Although, given that Potts initially was getting about the same number of carries as Mo, maybe more Sanford. Might be part Fleck too.

David Cobb dominated the carries among running backs in his two years as a starter but our QBs back then (Leidner and Nelson) ran a lot more than our quarterback runs now.

Sounds like the players did it, and I think it is fun....

I would be happy to see Bryce Williams get the starting nod. Call me crazy.

I think I recall seeing a tunnel screen ran sometime this year -- could be wrong

It’s amazing the depth we started the year with in the RB room… If Wiley, who I’m pretty sure is still over 5.0 YPC on his career is still our 4th RB… 🤯

So, you're going to nitpick because someone didn't know that the #7 running back was out for the season? Petty.
Got to give him credit. He actually knew the name of the #7 running back.
