Why should anyone care now that he's gone? I mean, I'm intrigued to know because my dealings with him left me with a positive impression of the guy (one shared by others I know who've interacted with him). But I'm not interested enough to freak out and toss out an emoticon heavy rant.

The reset button has been pushed. The laughingstock aspect is officially over. The narrative has changed. Why Brewster had so much turnover is now mostly a matter of idle curiousity, since he is gone. Not that there is anything wrong with idle curiousity, mind you.

The Dunbar situation actually made sense to me, seriously we were running HB sweeps out of the shotgun on 3rd and inches, all it would have taken was the addition of a power short yardage set under center, Dunbar wouldn't do it, and a struggle ensued.
The hiring of Fisch is where it went wrong, not the firing of Dunbar. Hire a better guy, we probably aren't where we are right now.
Whithers left to go coach a top D back home in NC, Roof basically same thing at Auburn(from the south, more $). My bet is those guys could have been much better here if they had stayed. I really can't put the blame on Brewster for those 2. Move on man, we're on the upswing now.

The top programs in the college football nation do not have much staff turnover. There is the diffence. Plain and simple.

I had hopes--high ones--for Brewster and the first red flag I saw was hiring Dunbar. I don't like the spread that much, but Dunbar's version of it almost seems to preclude the possibility of running the football effectively.

I think the epitaph on Brewster's coaching tombstone should read "Impatient from Day One Forward." Too much fiddling around.

I believe this is a big part on what caused this program to go down hill like it did under Brew. When the turnover really started snowballing I really ?ed how a program is going to turn around when this happens. Several comments were made that other programs that really turned things around went through the same thing with new coaches. Well, from what I understand, Ferentz still has assistants from the Fry era, correct me if I am wrong. I'm not suggesting that there should've been Mason asstistants retained however.

Brewster's hiring (by Maturi) assured that there would be no holdover coaches. It is reasonable to assume that a new coach won't retain someone on his staff that is currently employed in a position that can been seen as more prestigious then that of the new head coach. Most guys want their own people and they certainly don't want people holdovers who consider themselves smarter/ more qualified than their current boss.

I remember years ago, either right before or after Wacker, Sid made the comment that if they don't turn this program around they might as well drop down to next lower division.

I don't think all Brewster questions should be thought of as "things of the past". We need to learn about what went wrong if we hope to not repeat those mistakes.

I think the biggest problems with the assistants leaving is that the defensive coordinators got better job offers and the offensive coordinators were inept.

This is wrong. Its all about the players. Northwestern stays in shot gun for all short yardage plays just like almost all spread teams. They did fine in short yardage situations at TCF this year. If you remember the bowl game against kansas when they switched to the power I they still couldnt gain first downs in short yardage situations consistently. Its all about the players!
