leach laid it out on the line in the star tribune today. fans have their baseline for expectations now. we have a name coach who wins, graduates players and has the it factor stating in public that he wants our job. it's maturi's job to either hire leach or make a hire that is better than leach. anything less is unacceptable.

will maturi land a coach better than leach?

Because there are, at most, 15-20 coaches in the country that are better than Leach, I will say no.

+1. There just aren't many better resumes out there, and the ones that have better resumes are being paid more than we can offer, with the exception of Petersen and Patterson.

I'm hoping for Leach, but deep down I have a feeling Hoke is the hire. Not a terrible hire by any means, but I get the feeling his peak will be at or slightly above Glen Mason level.

why would we peak above mason? mason came in with a track record of turning around a major conference team that was bottom of the barrel before he got there and took them to a very good bowl in kansas. hoke hasn't done that.

Someone should send Maturi a link to this poll -- the results are pretty damning so far.

Maybe if we had a majority of the whole voting it would be. I doubt Maturi would take something voted on by 23 people as a major deciding factor.

Fair, but the day is young and I don't see a major swing occurring, to be honest.

(It's not like a message board poll is going to sway his opinion anyway.)

just hire somebody...anybody!!

so we can start bashing him and comparing him to Glen Mason and all the other previous coaches. I miss the good old days

Maturi will not find a guy better than Leach, because there are not many coaches out there who'd be a better hire. Sometimes you need to take a risk and this might be the risk the U needs to take.

Maybe a pile of emails to Maturi saying no Leach or better and I will not renew season tickets would get at least a little of his attention.

Maturi is considering other factors so not a chance. If you want a winning program hire Leach. If you want a program that is average to above average but has no baggage hire one of the other guys. We will get the latter with Maturi.

People are drawn to confidence and positive energy. Maturi reflects none of those attributes as reflected by this pole.

In some ways this sets up perfectly for Maturi and Bruinicks to take a chance on Leach. What's the worst that could happen? It blows up in thier face? So what? They're both out the door in the next 18 months. What's the U going to do? Fire them? Sadly, I don't think Joel has it in him, no matter what the circumstances.

Go4...I'm only saying that is the best we can hope for out of Hoke, referring to the minimal success, or lack thereof, he had at the U. Whereas with Leach, I would imagine we could contend with the higher ups in our division. Also, I would love to see Leach's brash personality butt heads with Bielema's.

Shannon is in the picture - which does not speak well for the search. Also, Leach is one of the better coaches in the country. So, no.

I don't believe there is a coach out there that is better than Leach.....

If we take Hoke over Leach then this program really is doomed for eternity

I agree that it's very doubtful Maturi will hire a better coach than Leach. That said, like I mentioned in another thread, if you've done your due diligence in researching Leach and a lot of people in the profession tell you to stay away from him, do you still hire him? There's a reason he's not being considered at Colorado and why Miami isn't beating down his door - even though he is also after that job as well. He really wants this job because he knows that for one reason or another it's going to be really tough for him to get a job. Still, he'll probably get a good job and do well, but I think he'd be our coach right now if the search process didn't reveal more red flags than we know about.

No, but that doesn't mean that we should berate and belittle the next coach, or start him with a less-than-fair shot at gaining our respect and fanaticism. Anything less is a disservice to the program.

Fire Maturi!!

Fire Maturi! He's ruining all of U sports. Settings us back centuries. Ok, decades.

Edsall is very underwhelming. Under 500 in the Conference play. Sound familiar?

If this poll was fair it should be sent to him.

This poll should be worded correctly to be usefull at all.

No one is saying that Leach wouldnt be the "best" coach hired the other problems he presents are why he wont be hired.

If Hoke is our guy and wants to be the guy it makes zero sense he is discussing this publicly. Zero. On the other hand, if he's o.k. with a big raise and more resources than he's ever had to stay home it makes plenty of sense.

I am expecting the very worst but hoping for the best. Who knows.

you mean the way everyone re-acted when brewster was hired?

The coach should be required to GAIN our respect and fanaticism. It shouldn't be gifted to him. Anything less is a disservice to OURSELVES AND THE PROGRAM.

Cut the dinky town "want a hug" nonsense. It's not very becoming of a big ten program....

As I have said many times on the basketball board, Maturi must go. He has not been held accountable for the brewster experiment and will be responsible for losing Tubby Smith as well. He is a nice guy but way over matched for this job. He has lost the vote of confidence from the people.
