Will Gray be the next Rickey Foggie

No disrespect to Foggie and his accomplishments as a Gopher, but I'll be disappointed in Gray if he doesn't exceed those standards and then some.

Well the guy you are disrespecting is Cory Sauter who QB'd the Gophers
in the mid-90's. People forget the Gophers led the Big Ten in passing for
three straight years in the mid-90's and Sauter made it into the pros so
he was pretty good and a lot of times underrated as a QB here.

Foggie was my fave QB though because he led a team that was 1-10 the
year before and put them on the map even as a true freshman which isn't
easy to do. It will be tough for Gray to equal Foggie's accomplishments
because Foggie was a four year starter and Gray will probably only start for
two years, assuming he isn't injured or someone like Alipate doesn't come
along and beat him out in a couple years. You never know...

Gray reminds me a lot of Rickey though in how he plays. He probably would
have been a perfect option QB in the Lou Holtz mold. I agree he has a lot
of talent and I would like to see what he can do. I think you have to give him
a chance to be next year's starter if Weber continues to struggle.

The big difference, Foggie was coached by Lou Holtz, who was a good judge of talent. And he was allowed to play. Gray, isn't allowed to play, much. Weber will be the starter all next year and will lead Brew to an early retirement.

Foggie got to play right away

Holtz pulled the local boy in the second half of the opener when he was faltering and we were in danger of losing to Rice! Foggie saved the day and started every game for four years except when injured.

Ricky was the Gophers last great quarterback. Will Gray be as good?

Just curious, because I was born in the 80's... but why was Ricky great compared to other recent Gopher quarterbacks who led us to mediocre bowl games?

If you just look at the numbers, Sauter broke records, which were broken by Khaliq, which were broken by Cupito, which have been broken by Weber.... so playing the numbers game may not tell us a whole lot. And for winning percentage, you would have to go back well before Foggie to find a "great quarterback".

Just my two cents.

I thought that was against Ohio State...

Actually, Greatplains is right, as usual.

Bret Sadek was supposed to be the QB, but Holtz benched him in favor of Foggie,
who went in and never looked back.

Foggie got hurt in the OSU game right at the most crucial time as the Gophers
were driving for a game-winning touchdown. Alan Holt came in on a 4th and 1 and
got stuffed by Spielman and Kumerow and we lost a heartbreaker.
That might be what you were thinking about.
