Per Jon:

As the football season approaches, fans of the Nebraska Cornhuskers are gearing up for what’s being touted as the biggest game of 2023. The matchup against the Minnesota Golden Gophers is not only the season opener but also a pivotal contest that sets the tone for the rest of the year. Jon Johnston from CornNation delves into the details of the game, dissecting each team’s strengths and strategies.

Minnesota’s dominance in recent years has put them in the spotlight. With a four-game winning streak against Nebraska and seven victories out of the last ten encounters, the Gophers have managed to physically overpower the Cornhuskers. Their approach, led by coach PJ Fleck, focuses on running the ball, extending possessions, and stifling opponents’ offensive efforts. Nebraska fans have been eagerly waiting for a turnaround, hoping for a closer game or a victory against their formidable rivals.

The key to victory for Nebraska lies in execution. The team is undergoing a transformation under first-year coach Matt Rule, who is implementing a three-five defense. This new approach aims to counter Minnesota’s well-established offensive game plan. The Cornhuskers’ defense must prevent Minnesota from converting third and fourth downs by disrupting their offense’s rhythm. The challenge is magnified by Minnesota’s change in quarterback, with Tanner Morgan being succeeded by Cali McEs. McEs’s mobility and decision-making prowess add a new dimension to the Gophers’ attack.

On the offensive front, Nebraska’s success hinges on disciplined play. Avoiding drive-killing penalties and turnovers are imperative. A trio of talented running backs—Irvin, Ramhir Johnson, and Anthony Grant—provides versatility and explosive potential. Nebraska’s offensive line must step up to create opportunities for the running backs and protect the quarterback.

The upcoming game is expected to be a battle of execution. Nebraska’s defense needs to adapt to Minnesota’s evolving offense, while the Cornhuskers’ offensive line must overcome the Gophers’ defensive efforts. Coach Matt Rule’s strategies and play-calling will be put to the test, as he aims to establish Nebraska’s offensive identity.

Ultimately, this clash is about setting the tone for the season. Nebraska fans hope to witness a resurgence in their team’s performance, with a well-executed game plan that counteracts Minnesota’s established tactics. A win against Minnesota would not only provide a confidence boost but also signal a potential turning point for Nebraska football. The contest promises excitement and anticipation as both teams vie for supremacy in the opening game of the 2023 season.

Go Gophers!!

Good lord
To read this analysis makes it seem as if the Huskers win, they are heading to the national playoffs- if they lose it’s 40 years of being lost in the desert

Go Gophers!!
Perhaps I'm not in the know, but who is Cali McE? Is he a ringer Coach Fleck brought in that none of us know about (except Typo Jon?).

I'm confused.

There are no expectations for year 1 of Rhule’s Nebraska, but they would like to have as much as they can to show fans that there is hope around the corner.

A win vs Minnesota would be a nice feather, for such a season where a bowl game isn’t guaranteed.

On the other hand, the Gophers badly need this game, a home game to boot. And the last two years have a few examples of home games that we “should not have lost”. (BG, ILL, Purdue)

This is definitely an “everything to lose” game for the Gophers. The win is expected, a loss would be very disappointing.

Add in that it’s Week 1 with no preseason in college, and you could easily see why this might be one of the most frustrating, aggravating, and anxiety inducing openers for Fleck since he’s been here.

Odd thing is that most of PJ’s head-scratching losses, and near losses, have come at home. Hope he gets that fixed this year.

This is certainly a pivotal game for both Nebraska and Minnesota.

It is a new era for the Gophers with Athan Kaliakmanis full of anticipation.

most of the article is about execution.

which boils down to - the team that plays better will win the game.

so - one team is installing entirely new offensive and defensive systems.
the other team is tweaking its offense.

I would say the team making the most changes also has a bigger challenge when it comes to execution.

this game might look different if it was being played in week #6 or #7. but it's being played in week #1. maybe Nebraska comes out with perfect execution right off the bat - but I'm not going to bet my life savings on it.

Really disappointing effort by Corn Nation. . He didn't bring his A-game in crafting this cliche riddled and underwhelming lack of insight preview/analysis. He usually has more spirit, more determination.

He is a more entertaining read when NE loses.
The game is particularly important for MN because their conference schedule and the NC game are very challenging.

Its really important to Husker fans. They live in the 90’s and think they should go undefeated every year…no matter how bad they were the year before. Delusional bunch.
What's the point of repeating something so often that has no basis in reality? Who are these people that are so often strawmanned on this board.

Has a lot of basis in reality. You must not know many Husker fans.
I've been to Lincoln multiple times and talked to huskers every game they've played in Minnesota -- I haven't found the basis in the hundreds of interactions I've had surrounding the games. It just seems to be a canard that gets repeated because it's fun to have a program so far beneath us to beat up upon (which it is!)

Let me help you….go over to the Rivals Huskers Board and you can find your interactions.
Ahh yes, the Rivals Huskers Board is where I'll find a representative sample of Husker fans you referred to in the OP 👍

there is a difference between thinking that a team "should" do something, and that they "will" do something.

I used to work with two die-hard Nebraska fans. they're not crazy - they see what the team is doing and they realize the issues - but in their hearts, they still believe that Nebraska could return to the Glory Days of Tom Osborne if they could just hire the right coach.

You can argue whether that makes them delusional or hopeful. Now, if Nebraska goes through a 'wilderness years' period as long as the Gopher program did, things may change.

He’s much better after the loss.

Cali McEs and Nuts should dominate the game.

I have to admit that this game scares me with a lot of new moving parts for both teams.

From the comments section...

"The key to a Husker W will be stopping long Gopher pass plays. Don't allow any 50+ yd plays and you've got a 50-50 chance if the turnovers are even."

I'll take 15-30 yard plays all day long. That was a real comment. Comical.
