Why do some NIU fans dislike Kill so much?

It's a tough thing for the people in the heat of the moment or for the people who are directly impacted however, it's pretty simple. Coaches will usually (some exceptions) take the better job offer. MAC coaches who succeed will go to the larger conferences. BCS schools without a ton of prestige will lose coaches to more prestigious programs. Some helmet school coaches will leave to go coach in the NFL.

I'm not saying that it is fair or the best method, but it is just how things work.

If Kill somehow gets us to 9 wins and a Tennessee backs up the Brinks Truck to his house, there will be no hard feelings on my part if he gets a fat contract.

I'd be pretty pissed if he left the team before the Big Ten Championship game or the Rose Bowl, and I think most people would be too.

I understand this kind of thing happens in CFB, but that wouldn't make me any less irked about it.

Also, there are a lot of fans on there sticking up for Kill. It's really just one bitter jackass that won't let it go.

On another note, does grammar deteriorate when you become a fan of a MAC team? Good gravy....they make this board look like a collection of Rhodes scholars.

How many people hate Lane Kiffin and/or Pete Carroll.
I wonder who the most respected coach in college football would be if we took a poll. I know that whoever wins would have someone that hates him. I'd also be willing to bet that if we took a poll say before last season, Joe Paterno would have won in a landslide.

Mark Richt seems like a really good guy.

Bill Snyder seems like a pretty stand-up guy.

Snyder was the first one that popped up in my mind. Richt is also a good choice. I gave my Phil Steele College Football preview a quick flip-through and those two stood out to me, along with Frank Beamer. Others that I liked were Dantonio, Ferentz and Patterson. Still, you're going to have people that loathe every one of them.

As an SIU fan, NIU has no right to complain on this topic. Its natural for really good coaches to move up the rung. SIU loyals are use to this truth.

Good Luck with Iowa!!
Its been fun following Minnesota Football.

You're still going to get the massive numbers of Christian-haters that will tell you these guys are the next Hitler...

***FYI*** I'm ambivalent to those who publicly profess their faith. Don't think it's a bad thing or a good thing. It is what it is. Doesn't directly change my life or belief system.

He tend to fly under the radar but Mike Riley at Oregon State is one of the more decent guys coaching D-1 football.

Why do people blame Notre Dame for being a better football program than the U? Does anyone question that this is the case? It sounds like a loser's mentality to me. Blame the U for not making itself a better football program than Notre Dame.

Totally agree. I am still amazed that people get so bent out of shape when coaches leave. I would also be willing to bet that if you put Kill in Holtz's shoes he would have done the exact same thing, heck he still might if he gets things rolling here and a top dollar job comes calling.

Snyder seems OK. I am a little concerned that he let that Ell Roberson play in a bowl game the day after he was charged with sexual assault at 3:00 a.m. Not sure what ever happened about the sex assault case (was he proven not guilty/guilty/charges dropped, etc), but he was clearly breaking curfew (Ok that's not all that serious but he could have been held out until the second half). I like Richt because he does not oversign recruits like most every other SEC coach does.

Richt also puts zero limitations on transfers, including within the SEC.

I'm totally agnostic, so liking Richt has nothing to do with his religion. He's adopted numerous special needs children, holds his players to a respectable academic/behavioral standard, doesn't oversign, and as the poster above mentioned, doesn't place heavy restricts on transfers. He's in an intense pressure environment and seems to do it the right way. He could worse the Sun God and it wouldn't change my opinion either way.

I hated Notre Dame long before Holtz went there. Holtz going there just increased the hate a little more.

He probably would. That's the nature of the game. Most people hold a grudge for the manner in which he left, not that he left; we're not idiots who don't realize Notre Dame was/is a more attractive job.

By the way, how about a high school kid who backs out of a verbal commitment? Don't know about you, but the guy you quote went on and on about what poor morals and character one of our recruits had because he was going to Vanderbilt after saying he was coming here. It's all part of the same game so I would hope folks are consistent

I'm fine with anyone hating Notre Dame (more power to them), but anyone mad at them for "stealing away" our coach is not dealing in reality. As I said, be mad at the U for not matching the salary. Be mad at the U for not doing everything they can to make this a destination job.

I most certainly did not. You're clearly confusing me with someone else. Please cite the post(s) where I allegedly did this, or kindly recant your statement. Thank you.

Peterson from BSU is another coach I think of as respectable. I don't know much about his personal life or his recruiting habits but he has chosen to stay at BSU even though he could have just about any job opening he wanted. That loyalty has to say something about the man.

Holtz said money wasn't the issue it was his dream to coach in South Bend. He is a dink but I don't fault him for it.

Kill left NIU in good shape. I think people wouldn't have resented Holtz so much if it hadn't crashed the Gophers progress. He did pull the Gophers out of the ditch, but there was no more progress.

I hope people realize that Jerry Kill has an almost Saban-like tendency to move around. Five years at Saginaw Valley State. Two years at Emporia State. An uncharacteristic seven years at Southern Illinois followed by just three years at Northern Illinois.

We all like to think that people will come to Minnesota and love us so much they'll never leave. But if we break out in Kill's fourth or fifth year, don't be surprised if he's willing to move another step up the ladder.

My hatred for the snake oil salesman has more to do with leaving us on probation, taking most of the recruiting class with him and saying many negative things about Minnesota after he left. But yes, after almost 30 years I still hate the bastard.

I'm p.o.'d with Holtz, too; he had absolutely no respect for us, players, program, state; picked up and left for his probably intended target all along...

Silly and absurd comparison. The only reason Kill went to Emporia St. was to be near his dying father. When his dad died, he moved on with his career path. Every new job he received (aside from ESU) was a significant promotion. Not so with Saban. Kill could very well move on, but it would be for a helmet school, and I don't think any will offer him.

Yeah, I'd say so. Sitting with an outside shot at a BCS bowl isn't a bad place to be. I wonder if Kill has any regrets? Side note: That Jordan Lynch turned out to be a pretty decent 2-star player, didn't he?

That he did.
