Why didn't Roddy come back home with Thorson?

STrib today pointing out some top Minnesotan players to follow this year in college basketball:

David Roddy, F, Colorado State (Breck)

Some Gophers fans assumed Roddy would come back to Minnesota with former Colorado State assistant Dave Thorson, who joined new U coach Ben Johnson's staff. But the former Breck star stayed put to become a favorite to win Mountain West Player of the Year after averaging 16 points and nine rebounds as a sophomore last season.


So ... what do you think the deal was, there?

- Does he not like Thorson and/or Ben?
- Does he still feel jaded/put off by Minnesota?
- Maybe it's as simple a strong sense of loyalty to Niko and CO St?
- Other factors?
- Some mixture of these?
 

My take is he has a pretty good thing going in Fort Collins. He's playing on a competitive team and the ball is in his hands a lot. He may also like the comparative free-flow of MWC hoops. Not nearly the grind of B1G, but quality conference no matter.

Because he's the star player on a borderline top 25 team who is the pre season favorite to win their conference
 

That is the much simpler and probably correct explanation that didn't even dawn on me. LOL

Aside:

would you say the Big Ten is somewhat unique in this regard, compared to the rest of the high-majors and even upper mid-majors? (not sure which you would label the MWC)

He wanted to win. It's that simple. Colorado State has a team that can win their conference. Minnesota has a team that may not win a conference game.

probably so. I noticed this via SI, which I found interesting. They have MWC down at #11 among their pre-season conference rankings. I think this is more a reflection of a lot more talent to spread around than years ago, and we now see the impact this can have each year via the transfer portal.

Maybe not that simple. If Roddy would've decided to transfer in, do you still think that they 'may not win a conference game?' It's simple addition... if Roddy transfers in, he knows his abilities and believes that he makes the team better. Under that scenario, losing all conference games is not even remotely a consideration.

It could also be exponential. If Roddy transfers in, he makes the team look more attractive and other more highly-touted players follow. Suddenly, you go from a team that may not win a conference game to a team that might compete for NCAA berth. That's the thing with basketball.... it only takes one key recruit to make a significant difference. You gotta sell the vision.

I am merely pointing out the poster's logic fail regarding the impact of a potential no-win conference season. However, adding a Roddy to the roster would have made have certainly made this situation more attractive to a big. It is a 1+1=3 scenario.
 

It is possible Thorson encouraged him to stay with Medved out of respect and loyalty.
If he did recruit him and failed, that's not a shining moment.
But Colorado St clearly is expected to be good. Loyalty to Medved, teammates, finish schooling, girlfriend? etc all in play for Roddy, plus being the leader of team, finish what he started there.
Bigger question to me is why Gabe doesn't want to play for these coaches?

I think Gabe just needed a change of scenery, his last 2 seasons were brutal. Don’t get me wrong, I liked Gabe and wish he would have stayed but it’s been tough to watch after a promising freshman year.

He wanted to win. He likes Fort Collins. He is in a program that has been establishing excellence. If he is good enough to play in the NBA, those scouts don't care where he played. They just crunch the data and give him a shot.
Moreso, going to Minnesota this season is a poor choice for any kid who wanted to go to the Dance. In this case staying at CSU was a no brainer.
 




Roddy has three more seasons, with the free covid year. That is including this year though, so two more after this year.

Any chance he might come home for the last one or two?

again....he is happy where he is at...
but there is always a chance....doesnt take much for kids these days to change there mind.

the only way i see him leaving is if Medved jumps to a bigger opportunity....and i would guess Roddy would be at the top of Medved list to follow him to his next school.

Roddy is a fun player to watch in that system...so if they are ever on TV its a good watch. They also have a 2nd MN kid in the 7 footer from Sauk Centre.
 


Roddy had 7 points, 8 rebounds and 3 assists against Oral Robert’s on 3 of 11 shooting. Does not play a position of need. Think he would struggle at the B1G level.

Yep! Other than the hail storms in summer and the obvious subsequent need for car ports, it's a wonderful place to live.

his point totals since the Oral Robets game have been....28, 17, 30, and 36....hes shooting 59% from the floor & 50% on 20 attempts from 3.....of course against some cupcakes....but he just scored 36 points against a then 4-0 creighton team

im in the opinion of him certainly being able to play at the B1G level and he would be starting at the other forward spot from Battle for us easily....
 

Maybe they win the MWC this year and have a nice run, he wins player of the year in MWC .... and he wants to give the B1G a try for his final year?

You could easily be right .... but why not, if they have a dream year this year, Nike stays in Ft Collins. He could even encourage Roddy to test the Big Ten under Ben. I'm making that up, but a guy can dream.
