Until recently Minnesota had better high school players. Does he recruit better? Does he teach better? Is he more motivated? They have had injuries, Leuer missed most of last season. I haven't heard about a ton of transfers or suspensions..does he get credit or do we just say its all on the players? Doesn't the coach choose who to recruit or not?

It would be nice to see Tubby more motivated. He just looks like he is along for the ride most of the time. Just once to see him get a technical when the refs are jobbing us. Just to let us know he cares?

I am not sure someone like Jacobsen or Miles could do any worse here. They both are having success with slower but skilled big men than tend to come out of Minnesota by the busload. Minneapolis also produces enough quick guards that you don't have to be a huge recruiter to line up a fundamentally sound team.

the following is copied from a Badger board (not sure about the legalities or protocal for this but credit goes to ATPANTS on the Buckyville board.)

Total RSCI Top 100 Big Ten recruits per team since Bo's first recruiting class arrived:

MSU - 21 (12 top 50 recruits)
OSU - 17 (10)
Illinois - 14 (8)
Indiana - 13 (5)
Michigan - 10 (5)
UW - 10 (3)
Minn - 7 (3)
Purdue - 7 (3)
Iowa - 5 (1)
PSU - 1 (0)
NW - 0 (ahhh, no)

Note: RSCI Top 100 commits to each school, not necessarily who finished at each school.

Total Wins in Big Ten games since Bo's first recruiting class arrived (as of 2/18/11):

UW - 105
MSU - 98
OSU - 94
Illinois - 92
Purdue - 82
Indiana - 68
Michigan - 65
Iowa - 63
Minn - 61
NW - 46
PSU - 41

Observations:
-UW has had some talent but there certainly seems to be something to the "Bo does more with less" theory. Very middle of the road in terms of ranked talent.
-MSU has had A LOT of talent pass through that program.
-I'm guessing that if an OSU fan ran the same numbers since Matta arrived, OSU would be looking REALLY good.
-Illinois and Indiana have had comparable talent during Bo's time here but check the win totals. Kelvin Sampson, the gift that keeps on giving.
-Michigan, Iowa and Minnesota have all been somewhat unstable (or really unstable in Iowa's case). Not sure any of those programs are out of the woods yet. Tubby seems to be the closest but can't keep a full roster together. Iowa has at least a glimmer of hope now with Coach Fran.
-NW seems happy with Carmody. I understand Northwestern is major D-1 hoops purgatory but can't they really find someone to win on at least a modest scale?
-Ed Dechellis is the Steve Yoder of PSU basketball. How does he still have a job?

Your UW Badger Top 100 RSCI players (for recreational purposes only):

7- Brian Butch
28 - Joe Krabbenhoft
37 - Greg Stiemsma
62 - Jason Bohannon
86 - John Leuer
88 - Trevon Hughes
90 - Boo Wade
91 - DeAaron Williams
95 - Evan Anderson
100 - Jared Berggren

(I'll post the MSU and OSU lists after a good night's sleep.)

Quite simply, 90% of his players improve every year. I think that's the number 1 reason. Take any player deemed to be a major loss in the offseason after his senior year by the media and then look at that player's freshman and sophomore stats.

F Wisconsin. And the Grinch they rode in on.

Bo Ryan has W 3 of 7 games (in his career) versus teams coached by Tubby Smith.

He has lost only 11 home games at Wisconsin - 1 of them to Tubby Smith coached team.

It has a lot to do with his system and his ability to keep kids around for 4 years. He may be an a-hole and huge whiner, but he can coach.

If only the committee's sole criteria were 'games played against Wisconsin or Minnesota.'

Do we really need one of these threads after every loss ? F*ck Wisconsin and f*ck Bo Ryan !!

Kohl Center, that's how they win. Win your home games and you're gonna be a factor.

Competent guard play will win a lot of games.

So if we lose, it's not Tubby's fault (it's because of not having a PG). But for the wins over Wisconsin, Tubby get's the credit (not Westbrook, who won 2 of those 3 for us).

This.

The Grinch just clones the same white guys year in and year out. Becky can screen and shoot. we have athletic guys to (should) get to the rack. They're completely different systems.

Which white guy is Jordan Taylor a clone of?

They must have some practice facility - or at the least, something that the badger players don't have to walk outside or across a street to get to.

Look at the players we do not have right now. Royce White, Paul Carter, Justin Cobbs, Maurice Walker, Devoe Joseph, Al Nolen. Give us these players right now and we have a very good team. Unfortunately due to injuries and transfers, we are down to 8 healthy scholarship players (not including redshirts) and are a 6-9 Big 10 team.

Tubby has done a good job of putting the players in place. However if there something he needs to do better, it's recruit players that aren't going to transfer. If he can do this we should consistently be an upper-half Big Ten team.

Royce White never played 1 minute here and Cobbs never was a factor when he did play. Using those 2 are poor examples.

Tubby's recruiting philosophy seems to have shifted towards Bo's this year and last. He is going after smart kinds with high ceilings.

Duke lost their point guard early in the year and he was a highly rated recruit and look at how they have struggled without him

They need to lose Nolan Smith too, then it'd be comparable.

How do you figure? Given the current circumstances, both would unquestionably be starting right now. It's not like we're talking about Cory Joseph or Harrison Barnes. Both of these players actually wore Gopher jerseys.

Nope. Why hurl smart ass remarks at me? I was just stating that Bo Ryan was an excellent coach and that Olando Tucker was not white.

Why the hate?

Because:

A) You suck.

B) You are a Badger fan.

C) You claim to be a fan of Gopher basketball and Badger football, which if it were true (which it isn't) is even worse than being a fan of Badger basketball and Badger football.

D) Did I mention the sucking?

Sorry, I was being serious, didn't mean to offend you. I saw a guy that looked like your photo at the game yesterday with a black and red leather-like material badger coat. He left with two minutes to go and a tied game to beat the traffic.

Not to nitpick, but I assume you meant Alando Tucker.

What I think it essentially boils down to is Bo is very good at getting the guys for his system.

-I'm guessing that if an OSU fan ran the same numbers since Matta arrived, OSU would be looking REALLY good.

Well, here you go - from the 2004-05 season (Matta's first) to present:
Bo Ryan 82-34 in B10 regular season games (1 regular season championship + 1 BTT title); 8 top-100, 2 top-50 recruits
Thad Matta 82-35 (3 regular season titles + 2 BTTs); 15 top-100, 9 top-50

The thing is, Ryan does a good job of targeting players who want to play for him and will buy into the system & stick around 4 years while Matta gets more players who are talented, but more interested in themselves than their team (sort of like Devoe) - I'd imagine the the number of years of service is similar even though Matta has had almost twice as many top-100 recruits.

Edit: Ryan has had 22.5 "years of service" from his 8 top-100 guys from 2004-present with 2 having eligibility for next season; Matta has had 30.5 years from his 15 top-100 guys with 4 being eligible for next year - so I suppose having a couple more good players has made the difference in helping Matta win more Big Ten titles than Bo since 2004-05. The regular season stats also don't take into account records in the postseason - Matta's teams have gone 11-4 in the Big Ten tourney and Bo has gone 7-5 since Matta entered the league.

Tubby had a point guard named Rajon Rondo and he still managed to lose 13 games!!
