The relationship between Brewster and Maturi has been described to me by a "person with knowledge of the situation" in a way that reminds me of the coach-dean relationship in Revenge of the Nerds. There is apparently very little respect shown by Brewster for his boss. It may have something to do with their personalities- Brewster being a domineering Alpha and Maturi being a far more reserved guy that avoids conflict. If Brewster "berated" Maturi in front of the players, it is apparently only one in a series of confrontations in which Maturi has been told to mind his "f'ing" business when it comes to the football team.

Bottom line- there's no doubt, to me, that this relationship is the undercurrent for any talk of replacing Brew. His actual performance would probably warrant an extension for most coaches.

Apparently hiring Brew was Maturi's decision, and it went against the thoughts of others, including those as high as it gets. This, alone, would put Maturi in an extremely tight spot unless he can deliver a Tier 1 coach to replace Brewster.

To me, if he's fired, a Maturi/Brewster relationship that has passed "crumbling" and is closing in on "decimated" would have to be at the heart of it. Maturi could dress it up in a number of ways, but there's nothing going on in the program that can't be corrected.

Other than the fact it seems Maturi is shadowing Brewster (which would be annoying, but for good reason during rebuilding), I don't see much weight in this thread.

I only ever hear the Maturi thing from people with an agenda. I'd like to actually hear it, or see it from somewhere a little more objective and Brewster neutral before i put any stock in it. I also think Maturi is a professional. He isn't going to make a decision based on hurt feelings.

There are a lot of people close to the Gopher program. If you want supporting evidence of any view point you'll find someone who shares it. If any of these guys had any credibility, even spent any reasonable time with the program maybe I'd take them seriously. But the leg work to actually be plugged in is beneath these guys. So, they believe what they want to, and seek out collaboration where they can find it. It's much easier.

I have been called a Brewster apologist and I am not calling for his head at all, but i've heard the exact thing from someone who works in the Athletic Department. I was hesitant to even bring it up because it might just seem like internet fluff, but take it for what it's worth.

Influential and powerful people in addition to the AD and U Prez, some who were against this hire and now are doing all they can to accelerate his canning. Maturi's problem is he can't even get phone calls returned, much less gauge someone's interest in taking over.

hey Schlong, do the Wisconsinites make fun of skunk boys sourpuss dumbass demeanor on the sidelines. Or is that only a phenomena everywhere else but wisconsin?

"person with knowledge of the situation"

right. I know lots of those "person with knowledge of the situation" types. True or false, its a business and in business it is common to have a poor personal relationship with those you work with.

Most people have good relationships with those they work with. But it isn't uncommon. Almost always there are things you appreciate and things you are unhappy with in most everyone. Which is why I discount inner rumors. There is every opinion to be found about anyone within any large organization. You can always find collaborating inside opinions. Means nothing if you haven't established yourself as an unbiased hardworking professional journalist. Which of course doesn't fit the discription of any of the local media spewing this stuff.

One big difference

I agree. There are some people I work with whom I wouldn't piss on if they were on fire. OTOH, having that sort of relationship with the person you work FOR is never a good thing. Usually though, those situations don't last long. And typically the boss gets the last laugh

Yep. My boss and I get it pretty heated arguments regularly. Nothing personal, just differences of opinion with respect to strategies and decisions. I'm not sure we'd be best friends outside of work, but there's enough respect there where I'm confident he's not going to can me for assertively representing my viewpoint. To some extent, I think he appreciates it.

I mean, we're talking about adults here. To quote Dan Hawkins "This ain't intramurals, brother."

It's time for Maturi (who is an idiot) to butt out of the running of the pgm. The jury is still out on TB,but give him 5 yrs. to do it his way and he either swims or sinks. That way it is all on him, with no excuses because of someone sticking their nose in his pgm. He either builds the pgm or not. Maturi is in over his head.

I agree, but there is a line. I lock horns with my boss frequently, but there is always a level of respect. Both ways. And you NEVER make your boss look bad, especily in front of others. IF these reports are true, Brewster has broken ALL of these rules. In divorce lawyer terms, that's "irreconcilable differences."

No agenda here, but I will tell you I heard all this stuff from a guy who dislikes Brewster immensely. I try to correct for that somewhat by only relaying stuff I think can be independently verified, as opposed to the more subjective stuff.

I think the general consensus is that Maturi is a lightweight, even apart from all this. The poster who said he can't get his calls returned seems to be on the right track.

Yeah, the games long stretches without touchdowns are all no Maturi, that jerk.

If Brew has disrespected his AD in front of players or other UM employees, then he's a stupid man, cutting his own throat. And it is weird, given the rumors and media buzz, that Maturi hasn't made a strong declaration of support for Brew at least for next year, if not through 2011.

People respect the boss' actions, not his title.

What if you're a manager (Brewster) at a company and you find out your boss (Maturi) is bad mouthing you to everyone of the investors (Boosters) and the media when your not there to defend yourself? I know what I would do. The foirst time I'd be knocking on his door and demanding some answers. The second time I'd take him to town and see how he likes it. There's no way to lead a team if you've got your boss openly undermining you. At that point you're better off telling him to mind his own f'ing business and making it really unpleasant for him. That forces him to either A) leave you alone to manage your business which is what you want or B) Forces him to fire you. If the boss if going to openly undermine me I don't want to work for him anyway and I'm liberated and liquidated. Win-win.

You are right, Maturi is an idiot. He hired this blowhard didn't he?

I suppose there are plenty of reasons to fire Brewster. Bet I could find as many for most coaches out there. Only a few seem to have a fully satisfied administration and fan base. What's intriguing, though, is the apparent sentiment here on the part of many (out to get our AD) that poor, incompetent Maturi does not possess enough authority to fire Brewster by himself because it's a major money decision, yet he was fully responsible for hiring Brew and Tubby. Huh?
