My guess is that Alverez can't quit coaching football.

What brings this question up? Because Thomas Brown took the rb job at his Alma Mater?

I see their RB coach Thomas Brown left for Georgia. Nice for the incoming RB's. Wisconsin is on verge of sh-ting the bed. It will start with the Alabama game.

Our focus needs to be about getting better and not the others getting worse. Looking forward to a new trend beginning next season at The Bank.

Is it okay if my focus goes to food, beer, and couch while watching the Wild tonight? Also, on that rare event when we do all focus together, who appears? "By your powers combined, I am ______."

I have some issues with the order, but no issues with the items.

He does seem pretty anxious to coach the bowl games. And players seem to lobby for him so my guess is he isn't in the background throughout the season. No idea though.
I did hear Anderson supposedly left because he couldn't get people into school.
Burt left for money and his assistants, many who left, were all at the bottom of the pay scale.
My guess is it's 25 different reasons but money is the number one reason.

Bring the politic nonsense to the off-topic board.

Wait, Ruppert thinks Wisconsin is right on the verge of ****ting the bed? I'm confident you've NEVER mentioned that before in the last 10 years.

You can go ahead and dismiss it as political, but having some of the lowest paid assistants and now Walker proposing another $300 million cut to the University system can have an impact on a coaches feeling of security.

That would be another square on a Minnesota off-season bingo board.

Yes, what is going on with Wisconsin's leadership is applicable to the University and the state's workforce. If these cuts happen, the University of Wisconsin will most certainly lose some of the best faculty and best future students. They could go from being at a similar education level to Minnesota to something more like Brett Bielama's Arkansas. If you were starting a family and career, would you want to do it in a state that is cutting the public education system?

This is a non-starter. We all know the athletic department budget it separate from the general budget. The governor hasn't proposed any cuts to spending in the athletic department, and the University (such as it is) isn't going anywhere.

world is changing pretty quick to make such a bold statement.

We have predicted Wisconsin's demise way too many times on this board (and by "we", I mostly mean Ruppert). Let's just assume Wisconsin continues to field the same caliber team, and hope that Kill knows what he doing well enough to surpass them. If Wisconsin does take a step backwards at some point, that's a bonus. However, as a sports fan, I'd rather see my team take steps forward and win by playing great football than sit around hoping that eventually all the teams around us crap the bed or we back into some success when we get some magically easy schedule.

I use to work in Wisconsin politics and still have strong relationships at the Capitol as well as at Bascom Hill and at the athletic department. As a U alum and strong Gopher fan, I felt like an island during my time in Madison, but did not hold back my strong support for the Gophers. I do have information on this issue.

Bielema left because he always had Barry looking over his shoulder. Bielema had a healthy ego and let in known because he wanted to be treated like the man while Alvarez was always going to be treated as the man. They did not have a good relationship, much like the relationship that Marquette had with Tom Crean in the final years at Marquette and Buzz Williams entire career in Milwaukee. People internally were not sad to see him leave. Money was such a small factor it was not funny. Bielema only made 250K more in salary which the UW could easily come up with and the Assistants were paid significantly more once Anderson arrived in Madison. You cant tell me that Barry could not have come up the extra money. They even had a stupid twitter battle after Bielema left for Arkansas which the UW President had to step in and stop. We talked about this on the gopherhole a couple years back.

Scott Walker has little to no interaction with the Athletic Department. The only time that they do is when any project that the UW Athletic Department needs goes to the Building Commission so that they can get bonding authority and the Ath. Dept bonded a lot during the renovations or building of facilities. Walker even tried to take away state oversight and authority so that they can have their own bonding capability, but was defeated in the legislature.

Yes, Gov. Walker has proposed to cut $300 million from the UW system over the next biennium; but this has a very little chance of passing in the budget process. It will probably get cut significantly, but they will get a cut in the end. UW will work their alumni base to make sure the cut is less. They are good at getting their alumni motivated in talking with the legislators. Plus an legislative audit a few years back showed that the UW system had over a $1 billion stashed from previous projects and different line items from many bienniums. The money may have been used to pay for tuition freezes for the last four years.

The connection between Walker and Athletic Department has no connection concerning coaching. The Athletic Department could care less who the Governor is in office. I would be the first to jump on anything with the UW, but there is nothing to this issue.

Excellent post. Thanks!

I don't mean this to be political, but if Scott Walker's policies lead to the demise of the Wisconsin football program I may just overdose on schadenfreude. It's my dream scenario...really MN, as a state, is looking soooo much better than Wisconsin at this point.

seriously it is much similar than all the in-depth look at each coach and his feeling. Wisconsin smells and the University has a mobster runnign the athletics and if you dont want to end up in a cement slab you get out as soon as you can

Actually it directly affects the Athletic Department. The administration has asked Barry to fork over an additional $3.5 million a year to help make up the budget shortfall. I think the annual total is around $6 or $8 million now. As recently as 2002, it was zero.

Meanwhile, the Milwaukee Bucks will be getting $200 million in state aid for a new arena.

In effect, the amateur UW AD is supporting a pro franchise. That's certainly a switch from the usual situation.

Yeah, a lot of that seems to be going on these days. The State of MN just stuffed a ton of cash into the pockets of some multi-millionaire named Zygi (see MN Vikings new stadium). You gotta love corporate welfare.
