In 2012 AJ Barker came from no where and caught 7 touchdown passes after joining the team in 2009 and entering 2012
with one reception. In 2013 David Cobb came from obscurity and gained over 1,000 yards. History says that somebody
who has not started, somebody nobody is expecting to contribute and barely has heard of at this point in the season is going to become a star
during the 2014 season. Who is it going to be?
Cole Banham? Jake Perra? Devon Wright? (from off the list to stardom?) Robert Ndondo-Lay from spring phenom to have
not heard his name all summer at D-line? Who?

Not talking about incoming freshman. Not talking about red shirt freshmen like Berkley Edwards etc. AJ and Cobb
were pretty much anonymous but had been here for a couple years.

Ya, I broke my own guideline and mentioned Perra...he's a walkon and it would be storybook.

This is a great question: My vote....Jake Perra. Having seen him and also seeing his progress at the scrimmage, he gets my vote. I see us needing a back-up QB. Streveler has the tools, but I don't see the presence in him that I see in Perra. Perra is a student of the game and very teachable. He might be our sleeper.

Love this question, 60's Guy. Going to sit back and watch, since I am too far out of the loop to have an educated guess.

Jacques not Jake
Isaac is probably the best bet. I doubt a true frosh walk on qb will be the guy. Good future though.

Great Question!

I narrowed down my offensive players choices to Rodrick Williams, Logan Hutton, Foster Bush, Brian Bobek, Joe Bjorklund, Nate Wozniak, Eric Carter, and Jephette Matilus.

On the defensive side I listed Jack Lynn, Rayfield Dixon, De'Niro Laster, and Jalen Myrick.

Lastly, on specialty teams I included Ryan Santoso and Andrew Harte.

From the offensive side my choice would have been Duke Anyanwu before he got hurt but now it is Brian Bobek. My second choice is Rodrick Williams. Also I really like the way Logan Hutton plays but I am afraid his contributions won’t be recognized. Lastly, my wild dark horse choice at 50 to 1 is Jephette Matilus.

On defensive side I like Jack Lynn but he is expected to start so I disqualified him. I then flipped a coin (not really) and chose De'Niro Laster on defense.

For the specialty teams my choice was Ryan Santoso.

For overall my choice was now narrowed down to Brian Bobek and Ryan Santoso. I couldn’t make a choice so I bought a daily double ticket for the two of them.

I was going to include him on my list but didn't because I decided to exclude all the new recruits. What really got my attention about Perra was the way Kill started to drool when he talked about him on the Sports Huddle on Sunday. He couldn't control his excitement about Perra.

P.S. After reading the original instructions I am afraid your choice is disqualified. The instructions clearly state "Not talking about incoming freshman." You are therefore required to take a reading comprehension class this fall. The good news is that you are eligible for the usual GopherHole volume discount.

As I've stated before, Perra is going to be a big contributor for the team. Although probably not this year. Hopefully he opens the coaching staff's eyes to the value of having a more pure passing QB at this level.

That being said, to answer the OP's question, I'm going to go with Freuchte. I think (hope) he'll step up big as a senior.

More than one person has mentioned Fruechte, which is a pretty odd candidate for a "breakout" player given that he's played in 25 games and started 15. In fact, the OP's criteria state: "somebody who has not started, somebody nobody is expecting to contribute and barely has heard of at this point in the season". Fruechte fails all three tests.

Hard to say. I follow the team closely and there was barely a word mentioned about Barker in the media through camp but he played a ton from the beginning. Cobs talent had always been praised but he had few chances. Id have to guess either a guy like Matilus or Hutton as we don't have too many guys that just haven't really played for multiple years that appear to be in the 2 deep

Doesn't really fit the criteria, but I think Melvin Holland Jr. will contribute a lot more than people are expecting him to.

Killjoy, give me a Mulligan. Jake (or Jacques for the purists) has a very nice throwing motion and some pocket presence. Yes, there is much more to being a QB than the aforementioned, but the guy could be a real sleeper.

We desperately need a back-up for Leinder...the guy is tough, but being a run first QB cuts your shelf life.

He's been around but he's certainly underperformed expectations. 25 games, many of them with him as the most experienced receiver, and only 2 touchdowns. He could triple that this season. Most of the WR talk has centered around Woli and Jones. Fruechte resurfacing as the lead receiver would certainly qualify as a breakout, at least by my standards.

I couldn't agree with you more. I also think Kill feels the same way about Perra too. On Sunday's
Sports Huddle show coach Kill had a hard time controlling his excitement about him. I almost could see the drool running down Kill's face. After hearing Kill talk about Perra I have to confess that I almost voted for him myself.

My guess is a guy like Hutton. something tells me he is due. he wont garner the best on the defensive side so he could be open more than not. and
also on the defensive side I think you will see a guy like Ekpe do well (see what i did there got a two for one)

Isaac is the closest thing I can find for the criteria. There aren't any guys I can think of that nobody is expecting to contribute who will play huge roles and who aren't freshman. Isaac has the best chance to massively outperform expectations, and he isn't a starter right now from what I've read. Starter at WR in this offense doesn't mean much anyway.

devon wright is an interesting choice... He showed lots of promise to me as an RB and then as a WR until his shoulder got mangled. I think he could show up and surprise a few. Matilus will be sneaky good I think as an outlet in the flat....

I watched the receivers a lot at fall practices and was pleasantly surprised to see how well he did. I didn't expect that since he was left off the fall practice squad originally but was able to join after Duke Anyanwu was injured. He is a slot receiver and is up against a lot of competition in KJ Maye and maybe Berkley Edwards at times. But you never know what can happen over the coarse of a season.

He doesn't totally fit the criteria because technically he started 3 games but I think it's almost critical that Campbell have a "breakout season" at the LB position. He looked pretty lost for a majority of the time he saw the field last year but hopefully now that he's been in the program for a bit and had a chance to watch some experienced seniors in Manuel and Hill, the light will come on and he starts to get it.

Go Campbell!!!

I'll try and stick with the criteria and go with Michael Amefula or Jack Lynn. It will probably be someone we aren't thinking of...hence the essence of the award.

a 3 year starter could win the David Cobb award?

I’m expecting Campbell to get 6-7 sacks and 10-11 TFLs and have a very similar year to Theiren Cockran last year. They are too similar.

I'll go with Eric Carter. I wanted to go with Nugget, but I wasn't sure if he hit the criteria.

BTW - I would not say Cobb came out of nowhere. Cobb was pimped for a few years and always looked great at practice and in scrimmages. His inability (or unwillingness) to block is the only thing that kept him off the field.

Jeff Borchardt

He's a Redshirt so I'm breaking the rules a little but I think he fits the bill, unheralded but seems to be having a good practice campaign.

Limegrover has always said that Cobb is the most talented back with the ball in his hands.

I think Fruechte is a an interesting choice because there is no lack of athletic talent to be a very good receiver. He mostly needs to judge the balls flight better and adjust his route to take advantage of his size and strength to beat defenders to a superior position to catch the ball to be a very good receiver. Basically, he has to develop the skills that made Decker a great WR. That is really tough to do, but catching a lot of balls in the offseason will really help.
However, I choose Jalen Myrick as a kick returner for this year's choice. With a sample size of one play, I thought his kick return in the scrimmage looked like Stoudermire with a fifth gear.

The winner might be from a position that has high injury rates. When accounting for the number of player-plays that positions are exposed to (e.g., 5 offensive linemen and 55-60+ plays per game) I think that the OL typically has the highest injury rates. Therefore I will go with Bobek, similar to how Bak stepped up a couple of years ago.
