Beth has been more active and bold in her tenure than Coyle has. I hate to say it, but I bet she makes a better hire and Iowa is back quicker than we are. I hope I'm wrong.

Go Gophers!!

One of the hottest names in CBB was from MN last time around (Dutcher) and we botched that. And Goetz is part of the Coyle AD tree (she worked for him for a few weeks before she left for UCONN) so maybe he taught her how to pass over a seemingly no-brainer.

Go Gophers!!

Two of the first things Coyle did in the Athletic Director's chair was fire a nine-win football coach (a lazy hire by Goetz) and a hall of fame wrestling coach. Within two years of being hired, he pushed out a hall of fame hockey coach.

So is that a vote for Coyle making a better hire than Goetz? If so, hope you're right.

Claeys wasn't going be a nine win coach again. The guy couldn't sell ice cream to Dilly Bar Dan. And J Robinson had to go. The whole damn team is selling Xanax and he thinks they should just have to apologize? You could make a case for keeping Lucia, but he just seemed disinterested at the end.

Right on everything except Robinson. The U wanted him gone for years because he wasn't politically correct. Then they used that opportunity to can him. That was a mistake.

But it's nothing compared to what happens in football and basketball.

Coaches in those sports have met with and paid gang leaders to ensure players go to their school. Nothing ever happens to those coaches. Don't even think for a moment that players in those sports don't have stuff cleaned up for them all the time either. Plenty of them have drug crimes, theft, assaults, dui, and more "taken care of," either by the coach or someone affiliated with the school.

Lucia needed to be pushed out. In fact all of them deserved what they got.

Such a hot name that he still hasn’t been hired out of the MW conference

At his age he was only going to leave for 1 job, that was MN. He absolutely loves SDSU and they treat him like a king. And it's easier to compete there for Sweet 16's and better there than it is at many P4 programs.

(Not intended for you as I know you know this) but this isn't MN hiring Monson, the hot mid-major coach. It's a lot more difficult for lower-third P4 programs to get mid-major coaches now because MM coaches are paid so well with a lot less pressure. Monson was making $80K at Gonzaga when we hired him for $800K, that's life changing money. If we were to hire Medved, who's currently making $1.8MM, we'd probably need to pay around $3MM, that's not life changing money as he's already paid exceptionally well.

Dutcher is making $2.3MM, $400K more than what MN paid Johnson.

So we should have kept Robinson because others do it? Terrible take.

Nope. He already has enough money and his families lives are in San Diego. At that age don’t need the stress of leaving the beach to take on a rebuild job.
It's at least an offer you think about. Especially with the ties...

Claeys was not a "lazy hire". They had no choice with Kill leaving mid-season. And they weren't going to let an interim AD hire a replacement.

It also feels like he's peaked at SDSU. They will likely never repeat the last two seasons. If he has 4-6 years left, does he want to end it coaching out the string there as a bubble team in the Mountain West? Or have his final act going out as a hero resurrecting his alma mater?

He probably won't take it, but it's not impossible it could be tempting.

Mike Max said Gophers are looking to offer a salary of about 2.5 million. We are doomed on hiring a good coach when a bunch of players combined will make more at other Big 10 programs.

Thats nuts if this is the ceiling

It wasn't one or two guys. It was wide open and widely known. The son of a friend of mine was on that team. I asked my friend about it and he REALLY didn't want to talk about it at all.
