Who was your team growing up through HS and College?

Clems gophers, Georgetown, and UNLV.
Literally identical teams. Growing up in Iowa, I remember watching Georgetown vs Minnesota for the NIT title. I *thought*, I liked both teams and would be happy with whoever won and then found myself open cheering for the Gophers as hard as I did against anyone else.

Biggest non-Gopher college disappointments from childhood were Duke upsetting UNLV and a couple of the Georgetown 1st/2nd round exits.

I may have shared this on here in the past, but when I was in 7th grade we lived in Tulsa and I attended the Wayman Tisdale Basketball Camp. They had a shooting contest and the winner won $10. I won the shooting contest so Tisdale called me up in front of the full camp and said “I’ll give you a 3 point attempt, you miss it and I keep the $10, you make it and I’ll mail you a $75 check.” I took the ball and drilled the 3, he picked me up, and hoisted me in the air. He wrote down my address on his arm, a week later I received a signed 8x10 and a $75 personal check.

I still have the 8x10 and a copy of the check (I photocopied it before I cashed it). He went on to have a great second career as a jazz musician. And died way too soon.

Go Wayman Tisdale!!
Cool story!!! Thanks for sharing

As a young kid I was fascinated by the Big East. Having only 5 channels and never seeing them play, names like Georgetown and Villanova sounded mythical (much cooler than Wisconsin, Iowa, etc.). Those epic Sports Illustrated cover photos didn't hurt.

Obviously the Gophers with Willie, Melvin, Richard, etc.

Second favorite was always Michigan. I love Glen Rice and Rumeal Robinson and the '89 run was magic. Then it went into the Fab 5, which was almost as fun.

The other one was Arkansas with Day, Mayberry, and Miller and 40 Minutes of Hell. When we got knocked out by GT in 1990, I was pulling hard for them to beat Duke.

Can't believe I'm about to admit this, but you asked. I was a huge Badgers fan. I grew up in Wisconsin and watched Final Four journeys and players like Brian Butch and Devin Harris and Alando Tucker. I watched them take down players like Greg Oden. I applied to both schools and UW asked me to do multiple essays as a second review. As a 2nd-semester Senior in HS, I was fully checked out and said "screw it" I'll take the already accepted U enrollment and the reciprocity that comes with it. I had no plans to be a Gopher basketball fan, but my best friend found a student ticket season pass on the ground as a Freshman and I paid him $25 or something nominal for it. I fell in love with the Barn's electricity immediately and would attend nearly every home game for my entire undergrad, including becoming a Barnyard (student section) Board member my Senior year at the U. I miss those days of being in love with Gopher b-ball and college b-ball in general.

I was a big fan of the 2009 North Carolina squad that won the natty....Tyler Hansbrough, Ty Lawson, Wayne Ellington, Danny Green....that team was a lot of fun to follow for 3 years.

Fab Five.

More recently I watched some Duke when they had a MN player on the team.

Both secondary to the MN Golden Gophers!!!!!

Outside of the Gophers, it was more about players but for most kids in my age group it also had to include UNLV to the Fab 5 to UNC (Stack/Sheed/Vince).

I’m all Gophers, always have been.

Teams I used to like:
1. Bobby Knight Hoosiers - still maintain Gophers should have hired him the second they fired him!
2. Lou Do MSU - loved Lou! Hate Izzo.
3. Denny Crum Louisville
4. Underdogs - Villanova over Georgetown, NC State over Houston
5. UNLV - loved the Shark!

Teams I hated:
1. Dean Smith UNC - have you ever seen a coach do less with more?
2. Iowa - duh!
3. Wisconsin
4. Indiana after Bobby
5. Gonzaga - coast through their conference much?

Only the Gophers.

But I would watch the Tark era UNLV teams just to watch them play D. Better than the 40 minutes of hell D.

Was a fan of DePaul with Mark Aguirre and coach Ray Meyer. Also Marquette w/ Al McGuire- loved the untucked unis :ROFLMAO:
Amazing how bad DePaul has been since their haydays. A lot like Georgetown and St. Johns
