DeAndre. Steady play all year and the catalyst for the team.

I have a hard time seeing us make the NIT without little Dre

I voted other only because it is too tough for me to pick just one guy as I think there were a few different MVPs at different times this season. If I was forced to pick just one guy I would probably have to go with Deandre but Austin was definitely the MVP during this NIT run and there were times during the year where Andre and Mo were too.

Dre Mathieu had a couple bad games in the middle of the season, and we saw how terrible the team looked without him.

I'm sure an argument could be made that he wasn't our "best" player; but if we're measuring value, it's not even a competition.

Without Lil Dre we don't get the ball across half court after Big Dre got injured.

Every team member tied for the award.

Mathieu without a doubt. If we didn't have him and Dre still got hurt, we would be in the CBI at best.

I had to go with Austin Hollins. He led this team in embracing a new coach, mentoring new teammates, and displaying a work ethic that was contagious. All the other's took on his personality and raised their games because of it. Had Austin not been here to give an example to Lil Dre, we may not have seen him shine so well as our point guard. Austin perfectly exemplified what it means to be a captain.

Every player contributed at different points in the season but I think my vote goes to the coaching staff. A lot of good things happened this year that bode well for the future.

I remember going to the open scrimmage before the season and wondering to myself, is this guy Mathieu just having a good day and playing unconscious out there, or is this what he can do? Looking back now from this perspective, what would this team have done without him? I cannot imagine this team if Richard hadn't found him and landed him.

Mathieu is the logical pick. Austin is my feel good choice.

I gave it to Austin as a Lifetime Achievement / Senior Leadership award. In terms of pure value (how much would the team drop off without a certain player) I agree that it's probably Little Dre.

It's Mathieu and it's not close. He brought an element of toughness/competitiveness to the Gophers that this team badly needed. With as shaky as 'Dre Hollins handle looked this year, I don't think we would have liked the results of 'Dre at point guard this year in this offense.

No disrespect to Austin, but without Deandre, this poll wouldn't have even been taken because our season would have been terrible!

Austin's my guy and we're gonna' miss him a lot more than some folks think, but this team is up a creek without a paddle with no DeAndre Mathieu. 12th-place finish in the B1G without him, no question.

That said, if Austin is named MVP by his teammates/coaches, will have no problem with that whatsoever.

I'm going with Mo. Without his transformation, again, none of this would have been possible.

Unfortunately, this season featured a prolonged slump for just about every player on the team. If an MVP measures which player affects the performance of the team the most, we seemed able to weather just about everybody else's slumps, but when Lil' Dre was having a bad game, it was ugly. I'm picking Mathieu.

I'm with SS on having no objection to Austin getting the award. He played great in the postseason.

Despite Austin easily being my favorite player the last three years...Little Dre is easily the m.v.p. for this season.

I'm a broken record in this thread but, yeah, it has to be Lil Drizzy - DeAndre Mathieu. Straw that stirred the drink for this team, without question. Yes, he was turnover prone at times, but his speed and aggressiveness kept us in so many games down the stretch. Invaluable.

Austin definitely stepped up his game though late in the season, if he didn't have such an awful stretch there during Big Ten play, it could have been him. Really glad to see him get the NIT MVP trophy though, on his way out the door.

I voted Deandre, too, but it was a tough choice between him and Austin. Deandre stands out so much because of the total absence of any player like him being on the team in recent history. When you don't have a good point guard, the results are usually frustrating.

Still, despite a few notable scoring droughts and a brief midseason turnover fever, Austin played very well the entire season. Even when he had trouble scoring, his defense and leadership remained very strong. It's a safe bet that none of the newcomers will be able to step in and play to his level during the first season, so the team will have to strengthen themselves at other positions.

Agree with most, if I'm picking one guy, I'd go with Mathieu. I'm thrilled with how Austin closed out his career, and he was easily the MVP of the NIT run and the end of the year. But early in the year, when other guys were struggling, it was Mathieu that kept us afloat. The game at Northwestern really sticks out to me for some reason, when we were in that malaise we always have in Evanston, he sparked it with the ability to get into the lane that was sorely lacking in our previous five trips there. Needless to say, I'm really glad he's returning.

But still, props to Austin for closing out his last year about as well as he could have hoped after how it was kinda going mid season.

Has to be Mathieu. Five games into the season I felt he looked like he might be the best point guard we've had since Bobby Jackson, now I would say that was the best season for a point guard I've seen in 20+ years since I started following the Gophers. We've had some great guards but they were usually not true point guards, It's interesting that we went through two coaches after Clem that couldn't seem to recruit a decent point guard and Pitino landed a solid one his first year. He either understands the importance more or just got lucky.

Mathieu also wins awards for most entertaining, favorite player, favorite attitude, best playmaker, tone-setter, ability to take-over, etc.
