I'm not sure of the real story with Nelson starting. Is Shortell hurt or do they just think Nelson is the better option? If Shortell is hurt and Gray can't play ... who is the back-up QB?

I think Shortell is both injured and ineffective. I think his injury is minor enough that he could play if needed.

The reports have been tough to decipher but it sounds like Max has practiced this week so I would think he would have to be the backup if Nelson starts. Also sounds like Gray may see the field so I guess he would probably be the emergency #3 option. The whole QB situation looks like a major mess right now. Hopefully this game will help sort out the rolls going forward and not make things even more confusing.

Marcus tweeted:

GophersNow: Philip Nelson is taking snaps with starting center Zac Epping in warmups right now. MarQueis Gray is snapping with backup center. #Gophers (4 minutes ago from web, retweeted by ESPN_BigTen and 1 others)

Reusse is stating on Sat morning sports show, 1500, that the coaching staff has not been happy with the play of either MG or Max and that is the reason Nelson may be playing today.

I think few people have been happy with their play. Both have had moments of good play, but for the most part haven't been what we hoped for.

I hope Nelson really lights it up. I think it is a shame that we are having to burn all these red shirts. I don't think the Gophers are going to do anything this year anyway. So maybe they should have just taken their lumps, saved the redshirts, with things looking brighter in the future. Oh well, "Water under the bridge."

I think they were hoping they could get by with either of them this year, but obviously they've reached a point where they feel like they gotta do something to spark this offense. I question doing it now, but boy, if it pays off....

Kill said Shortell has injured shoulder. Gray warmed up at QB & is #2 today.
