7. Minnesota Golden Gophers

Returning Production: 62% (No. 40 overall)

Offensive: 50% (No. 83)

Defensive: 73% (No. 11)

Minnesota's defense was a takeaway machine last season. The Golden Gophers also returned 73% of that defense, which racked up 17 interceptions. Still, Minnesota loses veteran QB Max Brosmer to the NFL and must adapt to a younger signal caller. All signs still point to a repeat performance from Minnesota, at least defensively.

I think we are now in a repeating pattern with Fleck's Gophers. Decent team every year. If the breaks and ball bounces go well, you get 2019. If the "woulda coulda's" are at a high percentage, you get 2023. Six wins is now the basement. Anything lower than that is a calamity. 8 wins is likely but not guaranteed on a year in and year out basis. 10 wins on occasion. Better than 10 wins is at least possible.

When you consider the growth and number of stellar programs in the B1G, this level of sustained team performance is a big step up from recent U of M systems.

In 2019 we were just really good. I don’t think it had anything to do with breaks and bounces. We had two handfuls of really good players and one handful of star players, which includes Morgan who couldn’t have played any better that year. With breaks and bounces, we would’ve won the West and been at least competitive in the championship game. Post 2019 we lost a lot of our star power and now mostly on defense but overall, I think we are starting to get it back. This year could be really good. If our quarterback turns out to be let’s say slightly above average and our OL and LB crews are also at least slightly above average the rest of the position groups should be outstanding with the only reach in that statement maybe the WR. You gotta worry a little bit about our inexperienced coaching staff, but let’s take a leap and hope that a lot of of these youngsters can keep up.

Interesting the level of talent coming back when you lose multiple players that may get drafted on defense.

Definitely a strong culture has been built.
