Remember He's Only a Sophomore...
Shady's only in his second year at a Big 10 school. Granted, the stable of RBs isn't great, but Whaley has shown that he's got skill, and Bennett was the starter last year before he got hurt. Eskridge seemed to be more consistent than Shady last year, and I'm guessing that's part of the reason why he's higher than Shady on the depth chart this year.
All that being said, it's entirely possible that Shady could do one of four things from here on out:
1) Work his tail end off and beat out one of the three guys currently ahead of him on the depth chart.
2) Work his tail end off, and still be 4th on the RB depth chart, but contribute on special teams.
3) Work his tail end off, and be ready to step in if one (or more) of the guys in front of him go down to injury.
4) Give up and assume he'll "never see the field", and possibly transfer.
Given all that I've read and heard, it seems like Shady's the kind of kid who will do #'s 1-3 --- all of which are positives for the Gopher football team.
I'm hopeful that he'll continue to work hard in class, on the field, and in the weight room; who knows when he might get a chance to run the ball? Both Bennett and Whaley could get dinged up at PSU this week, meaning Eskridge and Shady would probably share the carries. If that happens, perhaps he makes the best of it and shows some more consistency than he did as a TRUE FRESHMAN.
With all that being said, I hope that we are able to get Lipscomb qualified and in school for 2010, and that Brew & Co are able to sign another 4-star RB as well. We simply can't have too much talent, depth, and competition at RB.
As I've mentioned before, I think Lamonte Edwards could be the type of RB we've been clamoring for -- I hope he gets a chance in that mix. However, if he turns out to be a stud LB, I won't complain.
