We can't count our chickens before they hatch because the transfer portal will give the Gophers the option to move up or down.

but that is a separate group of players. the numbers in the OP are accurate as far as incoming HS players are concerned. in three of the last four recruiting cycles, the Gophers have been ranked in the 50's.

now - to be sure - NIL has changed the recruiting scene. I do not think it is a coincidence that three of the four lowest-rated classes have come in after NIL was approved in the Spring of 2021.

but it does indicate where the Gopher program sits on a national level.

again, this does not mean that the Gophers cannot field competitive teams. it just means that it has become harder to bring in top-level HS talent in the NIL era - making it more important for schools like MN that they do well in the portal.

The portal/NIL, both for getting new players and retaining quality players that might have been better than their star-ratings (Ersery is the perfect example), is just as important as the HS incoming class.

Quick look at the classes in terms of number of key players to come from them (rough estimate, sure I missed some guys) - this does not include transfers just high school. Also just factored in guys who played for us, couple transfers have done well for other schools.

2022, 2023, and 2024 - Too early to know for sure how many players will end up coming from these classes. So ranking the rest.

2018 - 12 Players
2020 - 11 Players
2021 - 8 Players
2017 - 7 Players
2019 - 6 Players
2022 - 6 Players

List kind of follows the list above which bodes well for last year's class. 2017 remains one of the more underrated classes. Some really good players came out of that class.

We need regional divisions for '25 and ever after. 18 teams swingin' in the wind won't do it.

What he’s been doing in Minnesota is remarkable. I know we don’t have a lot of talent, but what we do have he’s keeping it home and more and more of these kids are going to be different makers going forward. I think the Minnesota kids tend to be rated unfairly low so that probably artificially makes our class look worse than it is.

Less D1 football players in a 300 mile radius than any other BIG school, I would say PJ is doing quite well recruiting, especially locking up Minnesota’s top talent. NIL is a big piece, as I mentioned before, half of Oregon’s starters began their career at other schools
