Ok the surprise of this morning's news is starting to wear off and Teague has probably already locked himself in Bierman with a coffee machine and his Blackberry. When are we going to have a new head coach?

Conventional wisdom would say a hire would probably happen quickly, but there have been plenty of viable candidates thrown around that are still in the postseason and would likely be unavailable at this point.

When will we see the maroon and gold smoke from the chimney at Bierman??!?!
 

Has to be end of the week. If it isn't, then Teague messed up. We are going to get drilled by the national media for the next couple days. The courtside commentators for the Sweet 16 games will certainly talk about it in a negative light. We need a lights out hire in here ASAP.
 

I'm thinking Wednesday. Grab the headlines before games start up again on Thursday.

If not by Wednesday, something went haywire. If they cannot get this done by then, the dismissal should have been Thursday or Friday when focus was on games and not coaching changes. We are in a pile of bad press right now that could have been managed better.

Why is "bad press" so devistating? It's only temporary. The only thing that matters is getting a home run choice. If they don't do that - and only then - they have messed their shorts big time.
 



You'd think if Shaka is going to be the guy then we'll probably hear something tomorrow. If tomorrow and Wednesday pass with nothing then we're probably waiting for the next round of games to finish, meaning we'd like to talk to Buzz Williams, Gregg Marshall, and/or Andy Enfield. Considering how quickly this was announced I'm hoping Teague had something already lined up with a big name.
 

I really think it's gonna be Shaka, and I'm predicting a press conference on Wednesday.
 

I was doubtful a couple days ago on the chances of getting a big name, but with the decisiveness NT is acting with, it makes me believe he already knows the answer.

I would be happy with Shaka or Buzz Williams. (really happy).

Buzz sounds like he doesn't get along with the AD at Marquette, so I think that could be a good grab as a backup plan for Shaka.

I'm happier with Shaka than Buzz. Teague made a bold move. He better be able to back it up with some substance. I'll believe when I see.

To me, Buzz is more of a splash hire than Shaka. Either one would be A+ from a PR perspective. Both of them seem so far out of reach from a practical standpoint to me though.
 

The one thing I will say, the media has been checking with and getting denials from coaches like Jay Wright, Flip Saunders, and Anthony Grant.

We haven't heard anything from Shaka Smart or Buzz Williams. Shaka possibly because he doesn't even have us on his radar and Buzz because, well he's still playing obviously. Or one is our mystery candidate.

If Shaka is our guy, look for a 3PM press conference Thursday. This is the time line that makes most sense. There is also a outside chance that Mark Few is interested as he and the president Thayne McCulloh of Gozaga have had some conflicts since he took over in 2010. Mark Few is also rumored for UCLA as well so stay tuned.......Maybe Few can finish at MN what Dan Monson couldn't...(lol)

Few has not had the height of success we demand here at Minnesota! He consistently underperforms his seed in the tournament. Unacceptable candidate! Seriously, I would not be in favor because he has limited midwest connections. I thknk that is crucial. Most if not all the names mentioned so far have midwest conenctions personally or professionally.

If Shaka isn't announced by Thursday, I'm saying that the choice is somebody still playing (Grant at Bama in the NIT, Marshall Sweet 16 or Buzz in Sweet 16).

If Shaka was the choice and accepted, it makes sense to the let the Tubby firing pass a few days so it doesn't look like Teague had been negotiating with Smart before Tubby had lost to Florida. But later than Thursday and you can forget about Shaka.

Monson got further with Gonzaga than Few has. They've been the same team throughout both regimes...they just went from underrated to overrated. (This post was only half sarcastic and antagonistic).

Thursday at 3pm makes decent sense. We would all prefer today or Wednesday, but Thursday gives the appearance that negotiations only started AFTER Tubby was canned.

The Good News for Shaka lovers is that we haven't heard a peep from Mr.Smart yet....I'm hoping we don't until he turns up at our presser.

I think its a great sign that we haven't heard a Shaka quote about him not going anywhere...

If not tomorrow, then its off until next week. The NCAA frowns on naming coaches during tournament sessions.

Who is Ryan Iverson?
 


We already had this discussion in another thread. He is a former EP athlete that went to Delaware for basketball. He called in randomly and predicted they'd hire Shaka and that they are working on financials. Who knows if this kid even has sources, he could just be looking for attention/exposure.

Was it based on anything more than just his opinion? How connected is he to anything maroon and gold?
 


Definitely seems a little too quiet at the moment. Hopefully that means we are close to a hire.
