what's your favorite American rock band and why is it Journey?

If you mean American Rock Bands=Guitar Gods, then I've gotta go with these gents. (he took “the blues out of the Mississippi Delta and sent it to Mars.”)

assuming we rule out solo artists - then for best "American" groups - in terms of talent and influence:

Beach Boys
CCR
the Byrds
the Doors
Allman Brothers
Grateful Dead
Talking Heads
The Ramones (Gabba Gabba Hey....)

if you expand it out to include Motown, then put in the Temptations.

Add the Allman Brothers to my list as well. Long live Duane.

I can’t believe nobody has mentioned the Eagles. I love the Replacement and Suburbs mentions.

Grateful Dead
Cake
R.E.M.
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
Simon and Garfunkel

Wilco
The Cars

Weezer

Foo Fighters for me. If we're for sure talking American rock bands, I'm surprised to not see any mention of Aerosmith or Metallica or Foreigner. They're definitely up there. And I love Journey.

Van Halen or Van Hagar?
Don’t ever say Van Hagar.

Them there are fighting words.

Though I don’t mind the Hagar stuff not one single album compares to the DLR years.

It depends. For the last several years it's been the Tedeschi Trucks Band. Best band in the USA and it's not close.
