What's Next 26-27 Roster

Redshirting is becoming a rarity. Most players are unwilling to 'waste' a year sitting out and developing their craft and prefer learning on the court. In the portal era, most programs are unwilling to waste a scholarship for an extra year of an 'unproductive' player. The attitude is to see what they got then move on to another player if it doesn't work out.

I much prefer the good ol' days (still less than a decade ago!!) when both player and program were committed to one another and invested the time to build the relationship during recruiting AND during the 4-5 years that the student was with the program.
Red shirting is really about strength at this point and usually determined before the player steps on campus IMO. I would say mostly for bigs in the new era of the game. Guards can go mid-major and get really good playing time and transfer if able.

Nothing that I can post publicly yet. I would say as a hint.... Local players will be a focus but not the only focus.
I think this on both the women's and men's side. Some culture and success needed to be shown and some locals are wanting to come home. Now Niko and Dawn have to decide if they are wanting to play for themselves or the name on their jersey.

From a distance it looks like a lot of playing for themselves in college sports now.

I honestly view it as playing for the name on the jersey if you try to get the best players regardless of geography. As a Minnesotan, I want the best team possible representng Minnesota. That doesn't mean win at all costs. But it does mean finding who can help the team the most, even if they are from out of state. You are trying to get the great, local talent to stay here. But its not the only thing you focus on.

I’m already excited for next season! It’s very impressive the players and team have built a culture where nearly everyone returns. Seeing the stream of returners announced today was a relief. 😮‍💨 It says volumes about the coaches and players - this seems rare in the current college sports landscape.

Having the entire team announce their return before the portal opens can only help bring in the right players from the portal. They’ll see they have a talented supporting cast, and players that like to be here. It should help the coaches be able to focus now on finding the right pieces to gel with our core. A great day to be a Gopher wbb fan a week after a very exciting tournament run! With much of the rest of the world feeling so crazy right now I’m going to ride this wave 🌊 of good feels for as long as I can.

Assuming we won’t see any commits until after April 8th when the portal officially opens, unless it’s a grad transfer.
My wish:
Grad or senior PG, Grad or senior Center, and Ode.
It would bring experience and fresh young talent.

Yep. No need for a younger PG if the goal is to have TO run the show as a sophomore.

My roster 2026-2027:

Position Potential StarterPrimary Reserves
Point GuardJordan Ode (R Fr.)Tori Oehrlein (Fr.), Brynn Senden (Sr.)
Shooting GuardMara Braun (R-Sr.)Natalie Kussow (Fr.), Kennedy Klick (R Jr.)
Small ForwardTori McKinney(Jr.)Madison St. Rose(Gr.), Makena Christian (So.)
Power ForwardGrace Grocholski(Sr.)Taylor Woodson (R Jr.), Kylee Paben (Fr.)
CenterLana McCarthy(Jr.)Zoey Bershers (So.), Adit Kuol (Fr.)

Bring in better versions of Tonga and Glenn, based on selling the impact they had on a sweet 16 team.
This. I would rather you bring in someone with not only the talent but the drive to work hard. Players that are appreciative of the opportunity and therefore willing to do what it takes to help the team and shine themselves. You tout that Sweet Sixteen, a supportive and growing fan base, and good potential NIL relationships and I think you will have a lot of good if not great players like that interested in strengthening our team.

That said I would absolutely not turn down Audi Crooks if she wanted to come here. A new opportunity and new coach - and the opportunity to do the things she needs to increase her draft stock - I absolutely think she would make the changes needed to fit our system and improve her game.

Oof. That team's losing in the 1st Round of the NCAA Tournament. Hopefully they can do better than that.

No way that team is losing in the first round, it’s stronger than this years team. Give a little grace geez.

I would say I would like a more experienced PG to lead the team.

Suggestion? Replacing Ode I would guess.
Create a roster.

I don't think that's a terrible line up at all. But I think that whether or not someone like Jordan Ode or Tori O without college experience starts, I feel you need to have a veteran in there to mentor, sub out for them and take over if things aren't going well. Just like the QB role in football. You need a Kurt Warner., but in veteran women's basketball point guard form, that could start or backup and is a team player and OK with that. Ha

Is it possible that the three open scholarships are already spoken for…..and that there was not room for Holloway?

You used to be allowed 15 scholarship players and additional walkons but that changed with the legislation capping the roster at 15 total, correct. I think its just 15 period now from the NCAA site and rules from last year I saw.

Just a thought or a question? If Tori O. plays point guard and scores over 5,000 points, totals over 1,000 assists and is the career leading rebounder for Minnesota girls...why wouldn't she start for the Gophers as a freshman on a team that doesn't have a point guard?
I think we are recruiting a backup point guard.
She plays through contact, she handles the ball well, she shares the ball. She's not cat quick, but that's not going to change any time soon. Battle wasn't cat quick either. Probably be nice to only be double teamed occasionally versus often as a 5,000 point scorer.
53 points vs Minnehaha
