The total revenue from Big Ten TV football and basketball rights will nearly triple over the next 6 years. It will go from an average of $32 million last year to $57 million in 2018 alone. The $3,000,000 to pay out if they do get rid of the entire football coaching staff works out to about .5% of that 2018 money.

Yeah, he is a super cheap coach at this point. Probably cheapest per win in the B1G, maybe all power 5? Maybe that's a stretch but it wouldn't surprise me.

It's 2016. You assume there also won't be a buyout paid to bring in a new HC.

About 5.3%, actually. :)

Why does everyone around here want Fleck? If he has any type of success here he is gone to a "better" program instantly.

I don't...sorry a little trolling on my part to get them going.

Every decision in the history of mankind is based on cost

yeah I wasn't trying to call anyone specific out. Just seems like a lot of people are really excited about him and I don't think they should be. Mostly because Claeys is going to be our coach next year, I hope but also because he would move on to a job he thinks is better without even having to think about it.

As would every human in the history of football.

If you think it is better to leave, you leave. If you think it is better to stay, you stay.

Agree. He's the latest shiny new object for some, been saying the same...he would have gotten snapped up a while ago. Didn't even get a look from a few...says a lot to me.

Anyway, our last three posts should get them going again...

Well, need to have the opportunity to make that decision. Not sure PJ did.

Don't kid yourself. What ever the decision is, its all about cost. This University will not pay PJ Fleck or anyone else a Multi million dollar yearly wage. If there is a coaching change, it will take more than one Google search to figure out who the new hire is. From what I see in the news and the talk around town, we are prime for going backwards down a slope to hell. This University is not about athletics as a tool to promote education and the recruitment of donors.

Okay then, that means they keep Claeys and the staff because that's the cheapest route and nothing that has happened on or off the field matters.

Who's kidding who?

Jerry Kill was being paid a multi-million dollar yearly wage a little over one year ago.

We've already got our coach. He will be extended with a line in the sand regarding off field team behavior.

PJ Fleck strikes me as someone who will be very pedestrian if a better job shows up. If you think that he will do a better job than Tracy Claeys, you better put a very high buyout clause in his contract.

We already have a good coach in Claeys.

Agree.

I should just let this go, as it outs me as listening to Bob Sansevere's podcast, but he had Mike Gelfand on today and he not only said that the U athletic department bleeds money every year, but on top of that, sports like volleyball could get along just fine if they did away with football altogether.

I don't think anyone knows what is going on... or reasons.

They could increase their income but still not want to spend on a coach... so cost can still be a reason, but we just don't know.

Funny...one sport out of 18 that can survive without football...except the training table, weight room, practice areas, etc all exist because football exists.

The day to day costs of running a sports team don't stop with what they need today...what about all the infrastructure, marketing, ticket sales, compliance issues...huge dollars are required to run a big ten sports program beyond just the team needs.

Thus proving once again that Sansevere is a moron who plays with tiny ponies.
