What would this team do without a pair of Monson recruits?

Al Nolen and Blake Hoffarber combined 30 pts and endless leadership. I would hate to watch this club with strictly Tubby Smith recruits.

Seniors often show leadership and offer great contributions to a team. More on this breaking story at 11!

I will remember this thread after the end of the season next year, when the team is led by entirely Tubby recruits. I have a feeling you will be eating your words. Joe and Andre appear to be pretty good, as well as whatever third player we add with Devoe's scholarship.

The "Monson Recruits" thing is getting a bit old here...

Tubby has coached them his entire tenure and for their entire collegiate career... who's to say Tubby wouldn't have locked up them as solid in-state recruiting if he were there a year before?

Plus Mbakwe and Aldrich...

Isn't BigGopherFan the same guy who last year talked about how we sucked and everything about Minnesota sucks? I don't think his name is true.

Tulsa in 1993 and 94 had 47 W and made 2 Sweet 16 with 100% Tubby recruits.

Georgia in 1997 set a school record of 24 W with Tubby recruits.

UK averaged 25 W from 2001 thru 2007 and made 4 Sweet 16 with Tubby recruits.

Nolen and Hoffarber are very good players.

Nolen is a very good player? really? How many times has he been all Big Ten? Even honorable mention? Is he on the pre-season all Big Ten team? How many Big Ten teams would he start for? I say 3.

Right now their really isn't any backcourt players that Tubby recruited that are contributors. Take Devoe out of the mix and their isn't much. Hollins, Armelin, and Ahamisi have shown potential but they have long way to go. Without Joseph they are going to be hurting at the guard positions next year.

I really doubt that the incoming freshman will be big contributors next year, it would help if Andre Hollins could contribute from a scoring perspective day 1.

He isn't a championship caliber pg. He isn't even a contender caliber pg. Let's be honest here.

Nolen brings a lot to the table. Remember last year when ESPN said he was the missing cog for UNC? That's high praise from a national source, if you ask me. Nobody is arguing he is some clear-cut lottery pick, so don't get your undies in a wad.

My undies are fine. I am trying to figure out what the heck you are talking about with UNC. Who is UNC and what was the reference?

LMAO!!! Thanks for making my day. You're an official idiot. Ask Michael Jordan who is UNC.

Really? I didn't know we played UNC LAST YEAR. Read his post idiot.

No, I think it is YOU who needs to read the post again (and do a little Google research). Now, go find a wash cloth to get that egg off your face... still a little left near your right earlobe.

"Remember last year when ESPN said"

I have no egg on my face. I have no idea what the heck ESPN would have said last year about Nolen being the missing piece for UNC. No idea. If you do please tell me.

You know, just be honest. You are a homer and my criticism of Nolen got to you. He is 1-10 against WI and MSU and not a word from you. He plays well in one half against lowly IN and you champion him. You just don't like honesty.

Now tell me what ESPN would have said LAST YEAR about us missing Nolen against UNC. I am waiting.

You pretty much completely misunderstood his post. He posted the link above, but he was saying they said Al Nolen playing FOR North Carolina was a missing piece to their season last year, meaning if he were on UNC last year, they probably make the tourney and then some. Not that Nolen missing against us.

Most national pundits do consider Nolen a very good player. I think Gopher fans are the only ones who think he sucks.

I've championed Nolen since he got here so if that makes me a homer, guilty as charged. No, he didn't have great shooting games against WI and MSU, so what do you want me to post, "boo hoo"?

But back to the point, you won't even Google the reference to see how stupid you are? So here's a better question: what is the source of your clearly specific hatred of Nolen? Seriously. It's clear you don't know the guy and don't know much about basketball, so just what is it? Your hatred/criticism just seems a little too specific and personal.

Nolen is probably one of the best-liked and respected guys on this squad (in real life, not secret cyberworld)--amongst his teammates, his opponents (in the Big Ten and nationally) and the coaching ranks. So when a snake like you uses a fansite to spew venom on a guy who doesn't deserve it, I'm all over it like a mongoose on a viper.

But that still begs the question: You still don't know the UNC reference, do you?

He didn't misunderstand it, he just didn't want to acknowledge the fact that Nolen has a national reputation because of an error in reporting sites (ESPN vs SI). Minngg has a personal problem with Nolen. He needs to just admit it and move on.

I had never heard an ESPN analyst say that. If they did, they are nuts. I don't have a personal problem with Nolen. As far as Nolen having a national reputation, college basketball announcer sya good things about players. Nolen has no reputation other than as a good defender. If he did, he would make some pre-season all Big Ten teams. He made none.

Just the fact that you told me I can have no opinion because I am a Nolen "hater" is hilarious. You disappear when Nolen goes 1 for 10 and more turnovers than assists in two road losses and come out after he plays a good half against a weak opponent at home. You hate me because I don't like a player. I don't know Al Nolen. He seems like a good kid. He just isn't that good. I will be around for the rest of the year to remind you.

Shane Schilling smoked doobs and ran off into a field at night.

Trust me, MANY college players have done VERY well being "just a good defender"

You can't just brush off that he is a good defender like it means nothing.

And last night at least, he was driving. scoring. shooting. hitting. passing. what more would you like him to do in a game? Should he draw up plays, announce, and grab some pom poms too? Maybe throw on the Goldy suit for awhile?

You are entitled to your opinion, this is a fan site after all. But for a person who claims to "not know Nolen" you do harbor a very specific "dislike." Just because you don't see me doesn't mean I'm not here. So when the snake (you) slithers across the screen too often, beware the mongoose.

Besides, if you are a true Gopher fan, you'll want a healthy Nolen playing well, so keeping wishing for more bad games to justify your disdain. Joseph has left the building and he isn't coming back. And unless the Gophers get permission to suit up Vince Taylor or Saul Smith, this team is running out of guards.

"What would this team do without a pair of Monson recruits?"

The better more pertinent question would be:

Where would this program be if Dan Monson were still the Gophers' coach?

We'd have a team full of former Minnesota high school players who couldn't thrive in other programs so they transferred back?

These must be the same people who think/thought Devoe was a better pg than Nolen. Offensive stats don't tell everything about a player. Maybe we're not actually a top 25 team, but so far the coaches think we are and Nolen is a top 3 player on our team. He must be doing something alright.

Nolen would've had a tough time getting UNC to the dance last year...he was ineligible.

Good one. And probably true.

Also, I think the Nolen bashing is a bit much. He is not a top end D1 PG, but he is hardly dog meat either. You can win with Nolen as long as he is not the focal point of the offense and there are other good options. The problem with MN is there might not be enough other options and he is forced to do things he is not too good at.

On a very good team, Nolen would probably average 5-7 points per game and play good defense, and would not handicap the team on either end. But if he has to score 12+ points per game, I think MN is in trouble as a team.
