The first play run by the 2009 Gophers in a game at TCF should be the same very first play used to open Memorial Stadium on October 4, 1924 against North Dakota. We won the game 14-0 with William Spaulding in his last year as head coach. Later that year, the stadium was officially dedicated at a game that might be the biggest upset in Gopher football history....the 20-7 thumping of a great Illinois team led by Red Grange on November 15, 1924. Run the same first play from either of these games as a link to the great Gopher football history and a new on-campus stadium.
Wouldn't it be cool to see the Gophers line up in a formation that has not been seen for decades in college football....and then run it as a "tip of the hat" to Gopher on-campus football. The press, ESPN reporters, and other broadcasters would all be talking Gopher football. A discussion about Gopher football tradition would ensue. Murray Warmath would be there as a link to Memorial stadium as well. What a story it would be.
