Yeah...sorry Schnauzer...was pissed off at the Mauer contract again after seeing our payroll Monday's USA Today and wanted to take a shot at our $23 million light hitting catcher.

What I am saying is the things we can fear have already come true. Even the NCAA infractions (but I am not afraid of that going forward - only thing I really think Maturi did well).

The only thing we have to fear is fear itself...lets take a chance on an up and coming young head coach or Asst that can recruit, has big time experience under coaches that are proven winners and roll the dice. It isn't like we might destroy a dynasty here like a UCLA or KY hire could...this is MN, we need to risk more.

I don't want Joe Mauer running our teams...I want blasts over the walls, not singles up the middle...and if we strike out, so what. Babe Ruth is the HOF for hitting home runs (even though he also has more strike outs than anyone too)!

This blog is ridiculous. What a loser! Since Tubby did bad in the past we in Minnesota can't expect anything better than a son of a jerk of a guy/coach (immoral jerk). Why do we have to accept losing. It sucks to be a Minnesota sports fan and the loser guy who wrote this blog perpetuates the losing history of Minnesota sports. Thanks VILLA 7. This is one Gopher basketball season ticket holder that will NOT be renewing his tickets. Norwood Teague/Ellis ego's and being unprepared with this hire have officially wrecked Gopher basketball.

Very good point. In my opinion, Painter's coaching is identical to Keady's. I said that in my other posts. I wish NT would have brought in somebody to learn a few things from Tubby and then let him retire. bga1 mentioned that maybe Tubby did not like the idea and that's why he got fired. I think based on the talent level these days, a young coach might have a good season or two but at the end it is about the type of players you bring in. Until UofM upgrades the facilities, we will not see big name players come here no matter who is coaching.

+1 to your original comment but sidebar.....As a baseball nut. I'm going to call you on this one. Reggie Jackson has about twice as many as Babe Ruth ever had. I'd be surprised if Ruth was anywhere near the top of the list for strikeouts all time.

I think you made his point. You said, "It's not that far off. . ". Not that far off means that its a small fall to hit what you are calling rock bottom (4-14 type seasons), which means we are already almost there, which means not too much to lose.
We were paying a guy over $2 mil a year and rock bottom is not that far off. Was anybody saying that next year we were going to be any better? I would say no, and the recruiting was not looking better as well, which was not giving much hope for years beyond next year. The Gophers had what Tubby said was his best team and they finished 9th. In addition, with the "best team", of the three teams we finished ahead of in the standings, we lost to two of those teams.

What happens when we don't have "the best team"?

I say its much better to shoot for something better, at this point the downside risk isn't too much further down from where we are at, only 3 spots to be exact.

I agree with your opinion on hiring an up and coming coach and am glad we are taking that risk after not landing any of the guys we thought would be big hires. That being said, I think you hit the nail on the head in this post with what the real risk is. If Pitino isn't the guy and we have to go through one or two more "up and comers" before we find the right one then the next 4-7 years could be very tough for us gopher fans because there is definitely room for the program to regress from where we are now.

Oh bs. There were a ton of bad, negative, disturbing things about smith's time here that had little to do with wins or losses. We all know what they were. His team's repeated erratic performance, his strange game coaching and inexplicable substitution patterns made us look silly against too many opponents and left teague no choice,

regardless of the risk involved. It seems you might be suffering the same type of blindness, but in reverse.
