I don't think their staff's reaction was all that strange. I think Treadwell's best friend is on Ole Miss as well.

This is from Deadspin's NSD chat:

How much money did Ole Miss slip under the table for its class?

Probably not as much as you would think. They have really special connections to three of their top players (Nkemdiche's brother plays for them, Treadwell's best friend plays for them, and pretty much anyone from South Panola HS, like Conner, heads to Ole Miss.). The stars just aligned for them, and the town was instrumental in bringing in the class. Official visits to Ole Miss this year were raved about.
Treadwell idiotically and inexplicably posted a picture of him on twitter weeks after his commitment posing with a bunch of hundred dollar bills laid out on a table. His post was removed within an hour. I don't think the connection is as magical as people want to believe with their class as heartwarming as ESPN made it out to be.
Especially Treadwell and Tunsil. Tunsil all of a sudden out of nowhere after favoring Bama, Georgia and FSU for over a year takes a last second trip to Ole Miss and that's that. Please.
I don't get why people are so concerned. Spreading out the top 25 (top 100) is good for the Gophers and good for the Big Ten. A more competitive SEC is better than one of LSU/Bama/Florida cusing through and winning BCS titles.
I find it humorous when there is a backlash to an upstart program suddenly bringing in top-flight recruiting classes, whether Mississippi this year or what Baylor has done in basketball; while there's a distinct possibility of shadiness happening, there's a significant chance of shadiness happening everywhere (USC and Miami as just the most recent example of traditional powers engaged in malfeasance that is caught) and the scales are tipped so heavily towards the Alabamas, Ohio States, and Texases of the college football/basketball world that fresh blood such as Ole Miss, Baylor, Oregon, etc. brings a refreshing change to the landscape. I'd much rather see these recruits on Ole Miss' campus rather than Alabama's.
