What grade would you give the Tubby Smith era at Minnesota?

Tubby vs the rest of the NCAA or Tubby vs Minnesota tradition with or without violations?

C- for me.

Did some great things in the non-conference games but in the Big Ten he failed.

D for me. Tubby Smith's teams never got to the level I expected. It took six years to win a single NCAA tournament game and that was against a team falling apart and their best player was out with an injury. Tubby's teams seemed to constantly deal with injuries but the bigger problem was the transfers of players that could have helped replace the injured players. Transfers happen I understand but not like they do with key players. In the end Tubby's tenure was not very good.

I have to say B-. I don't agree with the decision to let him go at this time, but change can be good. Wish Tubby the best and I feel like he moved the program forward, but not quite fast or far enough.

I went with the Gentleman's C. As I look back over his tenure, I'm afraid his first year was his best. He took a group of pretty average players and got them to play well as a team. But I look at the players who left for other teams (excluding Royce who is/was a special case); the lack of any hallmark recruits; plus this year's drama and have to admit I'm not terribly disappointed in the decision to go separate ways.

Straight-up C.

Some pretty good highs, some pretty deep lows. And a middlin' finish at the end of each season.

To those who give it an "A"...are you really satisfied with the last 6 years? I sure as hell ain't.

I went with a C. Improved in many areas, but realy there was only one way to go with it.

I would like to know who gave an "A" and what the grading scale was.

Tubby did a good, very clean and admirable job in a competitive and difficult setting. He can retire a wealthy man. Wish him a long life. Have great respect for him and his philosophy.

I went with a "D", but maybe I put too much weight on his conference record. I could certainly see the argument for a "C" with 3 NCAA tournament appearances in 6 years and some very good non-conference wins. I'd still go back to the fact that we were a "bubble" team each of those 3 NCAA visits and never really felt like a contender for anything significant after January.

The sad thing for Tubby (and Gopher fans) is that we are not in this spot if Trevor/Royce were able to play in year 3. I think momentum is a huge thing in building a program and once that momentum stalls, it's really hard to get it back.

My grade is not meant as a rip on Tubby at all, but just my own analysis of the record. I think he's a class guy who would deserve a very nice hand if he returned to the Barn with another team or simply to watch a game.

I agree with you, it's a soft D.

I give him a B. Like Furry said, he pulled us out of a bad spot, which isn't easy, but never was able to take the next step and, most importantly in my opinion, wasn't able to improve when he got his own players in place of Monson's.

It's a "D". We spent big money, on a big name to end up with marginal recruiting classes and a B1G record well below 50%. The fact that we had been even worse dioesn't make this record a "C" or a "B". Records in sports are easy to grade. You win 50% of your conference games, it's a "C". Less than that, it isn't. It's the RESULTS, baby!

Tubby was his own worst enemy. He assembled some talent in his first couple of classes but bungled it with tearing them down and not properly building them back up. Every team was mentally fragile, both with in-game situations and over the course of a season. He was stubborn in his gameplans and sub patterns. He couldn't get out of his own way and that's why it can't be any better than a C. The promise was there but he's a relic where it's obvious he could adjust his style to the change of times. He also seemed to mail in recruiting over the past couple of years.

Al nolan doesn't mess up his grades then his ankle I think we would have been significantly different. B

C overall. This season was a D- given the talent and lack of injuries or transfers, a.k.a. excuses. Things spiraled out of control into a train wreck and we were fortunate to get a perfect draw in the first round of the NCAAs.
