What grade would you give the Gophers defense in win over Northwestern?

I gave it a C- (barely passing grade) because they scored WAY too many points on us. We can't hold WI or OSU at all with this type of defense performance

Average. We are outstanding on the first 4 drives (they had -2 yards), but terrible after. Too many yards given up on first down, pass defense was not terrible good. Lots of missed tackles and wide open holes for a terrible offense. They averaged 8.8 points going in and put 20 on us...

They were almost complete dog doo doo against one of the worst offenses in the NCAA. Our offense is incredible. The defense needs to step up. Especially next week against Wisconsin.

C

Game was never in doubt but still

Too many missed or failed tackles.... need to clean up and limit yards after the initial contact.

Started great.
Then I don't know what was going on with the second qb.

What does "step up" mean by the twelth game of the season? Our D is just limited in what they can do. Our D line is just not able to dominate the line. Excellent O, low average D, very low average special teams. IMHO.

B-. Too many missed tackles and got sloppy. However, game was never in doubt and key plays were made.

B, held them under 200 yards. Special team play by Gophers not good.

Not sure how you go from being super good to struggling in the same game.

Somewhere in that C range. This was a bad offense, and they were able to move the ball on sustained drives at times. Bad tackling at times. Looked alternately good eg Winfield then mediocre. Just ok?

I was a coach for more years than I can remember right now and I hate the way they teach tackling. They hit and roll or just hit with the shoulder with no wrap. I talked to our HS coach who used to coach in college. I was talking about putting the head across the body/wrapping up. He said they don't teach that anymore because the risk of injury.

When you look at the numbers it wasn’t that bad. Less than 100 yards passing, gave up 2.6 yards a carry. I vote C, would say specifically a C+.

Shouldn't have been that big a change but we were obviously really ready at the start. Very aggressive. Then the starting QB got hurt and a more mobile QB came in. The fact he could run put us back on our heels a bit. Very different offense that was game-planned for and it looked like it made guys more cautious. Also, many times you see a team just dominate and then let up a little.

They tackled so very poorly today. Everything was going for the big hit, or trying to strip the ball. If they just would have tackled, then the backups should have been able to play a lot today. NW's scheme was simplistic, and everything was short. I shudder to think of how bad Wisconsin will eat up the D if they play that way next week.

Injury? Arm injury? (Not sure if he elaborated?)

I’m pretty sure it is head and shoulder injuries that they are trying to prevent. Still love that tackle with the arms wrapped around the legs.

Definitely not one of their better days.

C - the game was never in doubt however we let the 128th rated offense out of 130 look like a legitimate offense.
