I'm on my phone so I can't cast a vote, yet, but I think it's clearly a F. I'm not even sure what the high point was.

I'd say winning at MSU was a point. Second half against Purdue at home. Winning at Iowa. Heaving like half of the top 10 players in steals.

There were some good things that kept me from voting F, D for sure though.

The high point was definitely winning at Michigan State for the first time since 1997.

I gave us a solid D. As disappointing as this season was, it wasn't nearly as bad as 03-04 or 06-07.

Go Gophers!!

It was a death march after they lost the first five conference games. At least in past seasons we had some fun before crashing and burning. As unenjoyable a season as I can remember.

D-, it was horrendous, but there were a few high points that kept it from being an F. As bad as it was, it could have been worse.

Seeing the team under achieve was hard. Disappointed mostly in Mathieu and how he regressed.

Mathieu having a down year was probably the saddest point for me too. Second saddest was probably Elliot's sorry decline.

Yep. The conference season started horribly. Then, there was just enough progress to keep you interested and hoping. Afterwards, there was the finale that wasn't much better than the beginning.

Given the expectations, an F. To go from expecting a relatively worry-free Selections Sunday led by your senior back-court to missing the NIT is brutal.

If I could point to one defining 10 minute stretch of the season , it was blowing the double digit lead at Purdue in the B1G opener.

The win at Sparty was special, but I just can't get past the unthinkable home losses to both Northwestern and Penn State, that and the overall 4-5 home record in conference play, and I remember when Williams Arena used to be considered one of the more intimidating road venues in all of college basketball. All other factors aside, losing our home court like that makes this past season nothing but a ringing F for me. What a damn shame.

D, lots of things pointed out in the previous posts. The Purdue loss, the 4-5 at home, Little Dre's start, Elliot, the non-con schedule, the defense. My outlook from 11 months ago, which was around a B, is in the D range also.

D... I agree with pretty much everything said in previous posts.

The Gophers will lose at Purdue 70% of the time. A conference season opener producing a probable outcome shouldn't effect a team for an entire season. It took Purdue about 8 minutes to pull even from a 10 point deficit. I've seen quicker collapses. Was losing that lead really any worse than the big deficits we incurred against OSU and Iowa at home before losing those by razor thin margins? No single game was causal. They were all symptomatic.

I'm not high on Pitino or this team right now but we should remind ourselves that we're not the only fans going through this sort of thing. Fans of programs with veteran coaches like California, South Carolina, Clemson, Florida State, Nebraska, and Kansas State are probably wondering about the same things.

"F"

Coming off an NIT championship and only losing one player of significance set expectations pretty high in a down BIG. So with four seniors and what was suppossed to be a solid backcourt, I'd say they bottomed out. Only positive was Mo Walker's improvement and now he is gone. Mason is the lone bright spot in my opinion from what returns. So there will be tons of opportunity for the incoming recruits.

I want with F. Certainly things could be worse, but I view grades as such:
- A would be in the 90's; greatly exceeding expectations
- B would be in the 80's; exceeding expectations
- C would be in the 70's; meets expectations
- D would be 66-69; below expectations
- F is below 65; failing

Based on this, I would think everyone would be either D or F, with F seeming pretty clear (IMHO). Is this the right way to apply grades or am I crazy? Or is this the right way and I'm crazy?

You forgot about grade inflation. "A" is for exceeding expectations. "B" is for meeting expectations (meaning fans are satisfied overall). "C" is for falling a little below expectations. "D" is for falling well below expectations and "F" is for a total disaster given expectations. That's why I gave this year a "D" rather than an "F." As someone else said, it could have been worse. We could have finished 15-18 instead of 18-15. For a contextual reference, I think Nebraska fans could be justified in assigning the F grade to their team.

"B" would have been finishing 6th or 7th in the conference, making the NCAA tournament, and possibly winning a game. "A" would have been possibly finishing higher in the conference and winning one or two games in the tournament. "C" would have been finishing 8th in the conference and going back to the NIT with a record similar to last year's.

C by definition is average or meeting expectations. In late December, it seems expectations were for a top five finish in the B1G and a trip to the NCAA tourney. So with that in mind, I have no idea how you'd give them a B for a 6th or 7th place finish. Earning a B in my mind would have been exceeding expectations, i.e. making the sweet 16.

D was the easy choice for me. This team didn't come anywhere close to meeting reasonable expectations. The only significant team-related accomplishments I can name are beating Iowa and Michigan State on the road. That's it.

I don't watch as much as I used to, but every time I watched this season, I couldn't believe what I was seeing and how much they had seemingly regressed from last season. Given the fact everyone but Austin Hollins was back, I don't see how it can be anything but an F.

It reminds me of a story my late father told about my late uncle (who was dumber than a sack of hammers). In those days, they gave state board tests in country schools. Out of 50 spelling words, my uncle got two right. The words he got right were "elephant" and "plow." My father figured that his brother knew "plow" from being around farm implements all day and that he stayed up all night studying the word "elephant." The Gophers had a couple of "elephant" moments this season in that they had a nice win or two, but overall, there's really no way this can be anything but a failing grade.

Seany and 50PoundHead pretty much summed up my thoughts.

I am sure their is a season where 6-12 in the B1G would deserve a D (certainly can never be higher than that), but this year wasn't that year. To put it in a slightly different context than other posters, the Gophers were favored in 8 of 9 conference home games and somehow managed to go just 4-5. I look at this way, the Gophers would have "earned" a D by going 8-10 in conference play by winning their home games against Northwestern and Penn State. Instead, they decided to leave no doubt about just how bad their performance was and absolutely earned their "F". Getting 100% on one paper (Michigan State) can't help you that much, they needed to ace the final (B1G tournament) to pass.

Well 86% of the Gopher Hole posters have the season at a D or an F. So definitely a poor performance on the court. Also with the recruiting for this current class - transfer guard kicked off team, sophomore guard arrested - freshman power forward quits after a month and a half - two bigs that are raw and dont contribute significant minutes for various reasons. Thank god we had Mason.

I like the incoming class, but it is going to take time for this to be turned around
