What Gopher uniforms would be best for throwbacks?

I’m of course partial to the full banana Mr Dungy is wearing in my avatar.

But what would we commemorate?

The 1977 victory over Michigan?

The 1960 team?

The really old ones like Bronco wore?

What would it be?

Honestly our current uniforms already have some "throwback" parts, so depending on the year not much would need to change.

Of course, it would depend on how close to a specific era design you wanted to be.

Do you just evoke a certain era, but have some differences that make it not a "true" modern replication? Or do you go all out and match the design as closely as possible?

Wish we'd just wear our current uniforms but stick with a more classic looking helmet with the old school 'M' (I think it has more character). Could even switch the black outline to white or remove it altogether.

The constant changes of helmets is too gimmicky and I don't like how (too rectangular ?) the current 'M' is. Stick with a solid classic look, that all the helmet schools do ...maybe you'd even become one too, lol.

For example, with our current uniforms, if you did a white helmet, maroon jersey, white pants you get pretty close to the home jerseys used from 1960-1967, with the following differences:
  • Our current white helmet has the block M on both sides of the helmet, while the helmet from 1960-1967 instead had the player's number on both sides.
  • The stripe on the current white helmet is a maroon, wood texture stripe in the center, thinner solid gold lines on either side of that, and then slightly thinner solid maroon lines on either side, while the helmet from 1960-1967 is a thick, solid gold line in the center, with slightly thinner (but still pretty thick) solid maroon lines on either side.
  • The current maroon jersey has the player's number on top of the shoulders, and stripes on the side of the shoulders, while the 1960-1967 jersey instead just has the player's number on the side of the shoulders.
  • The current maroon jersey features a small, gold Minnesota on the back of the jersey on the collar above the player's name, a block M on the front of the jersey on the collar above the player's number, and the B1G logo and Nike logo on the front on either side. By contrast, the 1960-1967 jersey was solid maroon other than the numbers, with no small designs or logos.
  • The sleeves on the 1960-1967 jersey went almost all the way to the elbow, while the current maroon jersey the sleeves just long enough cover the player's pads.
  • The current white pants have the Nike logo on the front above the left leg, while the pants from 1960-1967 have no logos.
Now some of these difference are just differences in the style of football jerseys now (sleeve length, having logos) and some may be unavoidable (I don't know if having the B1G logo on the jersey is required, and I doubt Nike would agree to removing their logo for a throwback uniform). Other things you could do a special throwback style for (helmets are easy to do a special design for to perfectly replicate the old helmets, doing a run of the jerseys without the shoulder stripe and moving where the numbers are on the shoulder).

I would argue that whoever designed the current iteration of our uniforms is trying to evoke some retro/throwback vibes without doing a full blown "throwback". Whether this makes it more or less likely for us to do a true throwback uniform is anyone's guess.

I mean, what helmet schools are you referring to? Michigan, Ohio State, and Notre Dame are the only ones I can think of that have had the same "style" helmet for a really long time and even they switch it up occasionally.

As well, notably, none of those schools feature their school logo or anything on the sides of the helmets, meaning there was less that could "change" over time (most school's logos have evolved over time).

Just off the top of my head:
Bama
Texas
Oklahoma
Tennessee
Georgia
LSU
Miami
USC
Michigan
OSU
etc.

Except for an occasional random alternate - these teams look great and don't ever need to change anything with the helmet / logo and for the most part unis.

...as an 80s/90s kid, I guess I just long for the days I could turn on a game and instantly know who was playing based on look alone. But I'm a visual person with an old soul.

I remember reading an article somewhere (can't find it again) about Gopher uniforms. As I recall it, when the Gophers went to the all-Gold uniforms in the 1930's, other teams complained because the color of the football allegedly blended in with the jerseys, making it more difficult for the other team to tell who was carrying the ball. I don't recall if the article suggested that this was a deliberate move on Bierman's part, but it may have been implied.

anyway - maybe some internet sleuth can dig this up.

How many times do I have to say it. RETURN TO GOLD COUNTRY!

I have read where Bierman did do it on purpose along with other things like screwing with the numbers and such.

Those throwback white helmets with the M&G stripe and number on the side were baller, I think we brought them back for awhile during the Kill years

2006 vs NDSU. I thought they were fugly lol.

The current iteration feel like they pay homage to old school jerseys but have some character still.

I prefer to look at it the other way around.
