I like the conclusion to this clip - it fits here.

MN Highschool Ball was in a down phase during Tubby's tenure and Key Big Ten Prospects were few. Now with an upswing of local talent the news staff will be starting from ground zero. Bad time to fire Smith. Still the local prospect level is way higher now then anytime during Tubby's tenure a plus oppurtunity for the next guy ! Fact is that Big Ten has few soft spots and it will take Bo Ryan Type coaching Genius to win with the talent the Gophs can recruit year in and year out. To think a new coach is going to bring in better out of state players then Tubby did is a Pipe Dream. Tubby had the resume and was a very big name so no logical reason to believe the next coach will carry the same weight as Tubby did on a national scale.

High school basketball wasn't in down phase when Tubby came here. During his time here, Royce White, Rodney Williams, Trent Lockett and Mike Bruesewitz, Jordan Taylor and Jarred Berggren all came through the state. Then came Joe Coleman. All those guys played major Division 1 basketball somewhere. There was plenty of talent as all those guys played high major basketball at one location or another.

That's not a dearth of talent. There was plenty of talent for everybody.

Tubby also was obviously no basketball genius, based on your own criteria of what it takes to win here. So, since we're obviously looking for a "basketball genius" and Tubby isn't one, we had to move on.

And finally, you have NO idea of what kind of recruiting connections the next coach will have, locally or otherwise. NONE. Why? Because he hasn't been hired yet.

I completely agree with the move and don't understand the opposite feelings.

Because he was arguably better than each of our last two coaches. Three tournament appearances, one tourney win, a run to the NIT title game (I know maybe it doesn't mean much, but it was fun to watch), a run to the Big Ten Tournament title game, and he didn't cheat. I realize Clem got a Sweet Sixteen, and an Elite Eight without cheating, but his cheating apparently damaged our program so badly that when comparing Monson to Tubby, people like to discount Monson's first two seasons because the sanctions severely crippled the program. Tubby didn't cheat, and he never reached the lows of 3 win Big Ten seasons. Even in Tubby's two 6-12 Big Ten regular seasons, we were down two or more players for about 80% of those games.

Taylor and Berggren were both committed to Wisconsin when Tubby got here, Lockett was in the same class that we took Royce, Rodney, and Mbakwe, and our state produced I think more than 30 D1 basketball players that year (not all of them high major, but that doesn't seem to matter to some posters). I'm not even sure what position Lockett played, I assume he was a 2 guard or something, but considering everyone maligns how Tubby didn't recruit "true point guards," I think most would be okay with him taking Cobbs over Lockett. The 2009 class was good, but I believe others have pointed out that over the past 5 years or so, Minnesota has put out fewer Rivals top 150 kids than most other Big Ten states. Four of the six players you mentioned were from the 2009 class, and Taylor and Berggren had both committed to Wisconsin before Tubby got here. In fact I think other than the 2009 class, Joe Coleman is the only Minnesota kid we've taken. We offered Shelby Moats, but he's at Vanderbilt, and this year he averaged 3 points in 16.6 minutes per game, I think he might be the only Minnesota kid Tubby offered and didn't get.

Basically, I don't think Minnesota has been as talent-rich during Tubby's tenure as you're making it out to be.

EDIT Also thought I'd add that if Royce White and Trevor Mbakwe had been able to play in 2009-10, Tubby might still be here, same for if Al Nolen hadn't gotten injured the year after.

I guess I'm kind of okay with the firing. Tubby did not have a full roster for more than half of his tenure, and that's not even including the transfers during the off-season, which can cause setbacks in a program as well. I think because of playing the entirety of the 2009-10 to 2011-12 seasons without all of our players, perhaps unfairly high expectations were placed on being able to win and win big this year with a (mostly) full roster.

The point is Minnesota wasn't exactly talent deficient either. The way the esteemed scout made it sound, there wasn't talent in the state when Tubby was here, which is patently false.

As for not having a full roster, injuries happen so that's not his fault. But losing players to transfers falls on him, especially with how Iverson, Joseph and Cobbs all performed after they left here. As for the pressure of winning this year, that falls on Tubby as well, who openly touted this as his "best team." While expectations may have been a little high, Tubby added to that pressure and therefore those expectations with his own words.

Probably had to be done, providing there is a good candidate to replace him. His teams were in a pattern of being erratic, starting strong, finishing weak in the B10. He also had a coaching profile of substituting too much, with whole teams coming and going, like hockey lines. Players also passed wildly and often took shots coming down the floor before the rest of the team had caught up. Turnovers and low scoring ruined many a game.

I never liked the hire from the beginning and I knew it wouldn't be a success. Not winning the Big Ten is a bust in my opinion. Mediocrity is not something to strive for.

Go Gophers !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
