Well to start...*NOT* lose to Northern Illinois...

Then win either a Trophy Game, Bowl Game or beat Ohio State...

Did you see the channel 5 piece on empty seats?

Just about everyone interviewed had some kind of fire Brewster comment, one student even said has Brewster resigned yet? The larger public perception is bad, not just hardcore fan's but all of it.

South Dakota loss was such a negative turn of event's, Brewster just might never get the fan's back. That might have been the blow that did him in. That's unfortunate as that loss just should not have happened. Perception may be wrong but that is half the problem, would a shocking win against a Rival trophy game get people back? I would think somewhat so, but this head coach seems like a lost cause, and I didn't even vote in this pole. I don't envy any coach that would take this on if the Brew get's cut loose as this is one tough "nutt" to crack. How do you win here with all of the negativity and self pity we have? You would think the worm would turn soon enough but not so far.

That was an option I should have included - nothing. There's nothing he can do to win you over - that should have been one. Error in polling!

I do see your point, I think after perception is so bad, there's no way to recover. I think that happened with Monson in the NIT. After the solid "I'm not going to go there" comment from Maturi - people thought he was gone. People that probably didn't want him fired before, but after the thought got in their head, there was no turning back.

I'm probably in the minority here, but I just don't understand why "negativity and self pity" have anything to do with whether the next head coach could win at Minnesota. Bring in a bright man, who is able to surround himself with a talented and admirable staff, find some good talent, coach 'em up, install creative and effective systems, and build yourself a winner. Easier said than done, but totally unrelated to the negativity and self pity issue.

Did you happen to watch Nevada dismantle Cal the other night? I wonder how many offers we made to the players who now play for Nevada? I truly haven't researched it, but I'm guessing a few of those guys would've accepted offers from Minnesota over Nevada. I have to wonder whether the current staff is as adept at recruiting talent and finding high-quality-but-lesser-known-players as other programs. For example, did we recruit South Dakota's quarterback? He seemed to be a better athlete and quarterback than any quarterback I've seen at Minnesota in the last 20 years. Some programs and coaches just have a better knack and aptitude at this stuff. No different than any other profession.

There wasn't an answer in the poll that said "nothing". If there was, I'd have voted for that.

For me, even if Brewster were to take us to the Rose Bowl, we'd lose in a most terrible way that inflicted the most pain on our fanbase and state. I had been a Brewster supporter all along - the South Dakota game did it for me.

For me, he would need to go 5-3 in the Big Ten and show that he is capable of beating quality teams on a regular basis. Unfortunately, I'm not the one who makes the decisions and I think most of the fan base has already voted. I didn't think Brewster coached a terrible game yesterday, but the program is not where it should be at this point in his tenure.

First off public opinion is a little far down in things that matter for this year. The only thing that matters is if Brew can still recruit, whether he has control of his team, and if by the end of the year it looks like the team has improved. Maturi knows the only thing that will matter is wins. He will assess whether Brew is closer to producing a winner or not. End of discussion.

there is no magic win tally, or big signature win.

I'll only disagree slightly here. One of the things that any coach needs to do is put butts in seats. Brewster gave up the home field advantage in year one of the new stadium. Year two looks bad and the loss to USD certainly will hurt this metric.

Most of the tickets are sold, yes, but that only goes so long. The impact of the negative perception of Brewster on tickets sold will also weigh into this -- assuming Maturi is able to draw the correlation that his beloved co-ed tiddly-winks squad will be underfunded when Brewster can't fill our new stadium.

A magic win tally or signature win would help Brewster in this metric alone. It ain't as simple as any of us want it to be.

Reality is this: The President is a lame duck. The AD is a lame duck. The coach may be a lame duck, but we're probably stuck with this situation until: There is a new president to fire the lame duck AD, who will fire the lame duck coach and we'll start all over again. None of the individuals involved have the stones to do anything about this situation, they'll leave it for someone else to take care of.

Brewster's probably here next year regardless of what he's done for the exact same reason we're in this mess. The administration doesn't understand or care about the value of a sports program at the University.

Maybe in year five we can beat the FCS school on our schedule and do more than take advantage of a ranked opponents ennui in playing us to do more than hang around for three quarters, then fold up our tents and go home -- returning only to score a meaningless touchdown against the third string when the game is decided so the box score looks a little better. THIS IS. Minnesota football under Brewster.

Like I said, the only thing that will keep butts in the seat is a winning team. Everybody knew it wasn't going to happen this year. Maturi only cares if Brew can create that winning team or not. If it looks like he can't he's gone. If it looks like he can he stays.

If he waives his salary for a couple of years, he'll be back.

Even if the Gophers beat Wisc and Iowa, they could end up 3-9. That's enough to call for his head. Bowl game or bust.

My formula for Brew to save job

1. Finish 2-2 in the non conference;
2. Win 4+ Big Ten games; AND
3. A victory over Wisconsin, Ohio State, or Iowa

Anything less and he should be fired. And if that happens, Joel Maturi can NOT be the one responsible for hiring the next coach. If that means Maturi is gone, so be it.

"How do you win here with all of the negativity and self pity we have?" Is it just me, or is that question loaded with negativity and self-pity?

Considering the lame-duck status of both Bruiniks and Maturi, I don't think it'll take too much for Brewster to stick around for another season. Winning one trophy game and not getting blown out of any winnable games should do it. If he sticks around I wonder if Cosgrove will be served up as a sacrificial lamb though...

As dumb as it sounds, I think that how we lose matters. Ask Mason about that.

I am also very happy with direction of the program.

The impatience and knee jerk reactions of Minnesota fans amazes me. Next year is the year that tells us where Brew is at. His defense he recruited will have some experience. He will have his QB and the second year with Horton. Firing Brew now or at the end of this season would be a HUGE mistake.

We hear this every year...

Dear Mr. Maturi:

Please do not fire Mr. Brewster. I pray with all of my heart that Mr. Brewster stays at the helm of this great University for many years to come.

Signed,
Coach Bielema
Coach Dantonio
Coach Ferentz
Coach Fitzgerald
Coach Zook (aka the Zooker)
Coach Dick Rod
Coach Sweater Vest
Coach Joepa
Coaches of Purdue and Indiana (names unknown due to apathy)

I think a set number of victories will not be the determining factor. By the end of the season if it looks like this team has made big strides and they could be very good next year then Brewster will stay.

If Brewster is allowed to stay another year then next year has to be a really good year. They would definetly need a break through year in 2011.
